Lake cleanup planned
YOUNGSTOWN — Mill Creek MetroParks is inviting residents of all ages to help clean the shores of Lake Glacier on Thursday.
Participants will take kayaks out on the lake to collect litter and fishing line, with a prize for the person who collects the most bobbing material.
Those who are interested should meet at 10 a.m. at the Lake Glacier Boathouse on West Glacier Drive. This is a free event and park representatives would like to thank everyone for their help in keeping the lake clean.
Defendant’s bond set
WARREN — Bond was set at $1 million Tuesday for Timothy R. Anderson, 21, of Palmyra Road, charged with the June 16 armed robbery of Lincoln Elementary on Atlantic Street.
Anderson appeared before Judge Andrew Logan in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court and pleaded innocent to charges of aggravated robbery with a gun specification and two counts of felonious assault with a gun specification. If convicted, he could face 29 years in prison.
He is accused of stealing $11,180 in tuition money from the school. The felonious assault charges stem from threatening two employees with a gun while taking the money. Anderson was returned to Trumbull County recently after he was arrested June 24 outside an apartment complex in Henderson, Nev., near Las Vegas.
Pilot’s plane damaged
VIENNA — The pilot of a small airplane failed to deploy his landing gear while practicing “touch-and-gos” at the Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport and damaged the propeller and underside of the fuselage Monday night.
A touch-and-go is an operation by an aircraft in which the aircraft lands and departs on a runway without stopping or exiting the runway, according to the Web site pilotsweb.com.
The pilot, Gary Moore, 66, of Hubbard, and his passenger, Byron F. Smith, 68, of Warren, were uninjured in the 10:07 p.m. accident, the Ohio State Highway Patrol Warren Post reported.
The plane slid down the runway before coming to a stop, the OSP said.
The OSP continues to investigate the crash and has notified the Federal Aviation Administration, which also plans an investigation. Moore was flying a Piper PA-24-180 at the time of the accident.
Man turns himself in
BOARDMAN — A 24-year-old Shields Road man turned himself in to police after being accused of exposing himself at a lottery drive-through.
Thomas Haynes turned himself in to police Monday afternoon on a warrant charging him with public indecency.
On July 2, a 21-year-old woman working at Millionaires Express, South Avenue, told police that a man arrived to buy lottery tickets and while sitting in his car, the man pulled his shorts down, then drove away.
Haynes is scheduled to appear for a pretrial hearing Aug. 14 in Mahoning County Court.
Assault at Borts Pool
YOUNGSTOWN — A 12-year-old Imperial Street girl assaulted by a group of youths as she left Borts Pool on Monday evening ended up with a black eye, chipped tooth, swollen nose and mouth, and scrapes and bruises, police said.
The girl’s mother told police that the attack happened around 6:15 p.m. at the corner of Belle Vista and Connecticut avenues, where the pool is located on the West Side. No suspects were identified in the police report. The report was turned over to the juvenile division.
New Castle road closing
NEW CASTLE, Pa. — Neshannock Avenue Extension from Neshannock Avenue to Paper Mill Bridge has been closed because the city is installing new water lines in the street. The street is expected to remain closed through Friday.
