Lane promotes Boykin

YOUNGSTOWN — Former YSU football player Trent Boykin was hired as head football coach at Lane College.

Boykin was hired in January by Lane to coach special teams, running backs and to serve as recruiting coordinator.

Lane was coached last fall by Johnnie Cole who accepted the Texas Southern position.

Cole was replaced by Dearrion Snead in December but he was recently fired for altering a student transfer document.

Olsavsky participates

YOUNGSTOWN — YSU assistant football coach Jerry Olsavsky will participate in the Courage Classic, a three-day 157-mile bike ride through the Colorado Rockies, beginning Saturday.

Because of YSU football commitments, Olsavsky is riding in just the first day of the event, a 58-mile climb through the Vail pass with a rise in elevation of 3,985 feet.

A graduate of Chaney High School, Olsavsky spent 10 seasons in the National Football League.

Popovec golf champ

YOUNGSTOWN — Michael Popovec shot 148 to win the Mill Creek Park 15-17 junior golf tournament.

Popovec had rounds of 71 and 77 to win the two-day, 36-hold match play event.

Class AA baseball

YOUNGSTOWN — The opening games of the Class AA baseball league playoffs will begin tonight at Pemberton-Donnell Park, after rain postponed the scheduled lid-lifters Monday.

In tonight’s semifinal series openers, Roth Brothers will meet Penn-Ohio at 6:30 while Tri-county will oppose Youngstown Metros at 8:30. Both semifinal series are best-of-five.

Garrett Frank shoots 66, ties for first

PAINESVILLE — Garrett Frank of Youngstown shot a five-under 66 to tie for first place Monday in the Ohio Open Golf Championship at Quail Hollow Golf Course.

Tied for 11th was Dennis Miller of Canfield (69) while Larry Manski of Salem was tied for 50th with a 72.

Paul Wackerly of Columbiana, Jon Jones of Warren and Jonah Karzmer of Canfield all tied for 68th with a 73 and Colin Clemente of Hubbard turned in a 74 to tie for 89th.

Also in the tournament was Andrew Santor of Youngstown (75), Dan Goodman of Salem (77), Scott Karabin of Warren (82), Jacob Detec of Girard (85), Paul Cene of Youngstown (86) and Warren’s Brenton Gadson(95).

Hardhats in action

YOUNGSTOWN — The Steel Valley Hardhats will challenge the No. 2-ranked minor league football team in the nation Saturday at South Field.

The Hardhats will meet the Mid-Ohio Jets, who are ranked No. 2 in the nation by Minor League Football, in a Mid-Ohio League game at 7 p.m.

The Jets (7-0) hold first place in the MOL while the Hardhats (6-1) are in second place. The Hardhats lost to the Jets earlier in the season in Columbus, 64-14.

Penguins re-sign Taffe

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Penguins signed forward Jeff Taffe to a one-year contract on Monday, giving him a chance to play a second season with the team.

The 6-foot-3, 208-pound forward debuted with the Penguins in December. In 45 games, Taffe had five goals and seven assists.

The native of Hastings, Minn., was originally chosen by the St. Louis Blues in the first round of the 2000 NHL draft. In 145 career games with the Penguins, the Phoenix Coyotes and the New York Rangers, Taffe has 20 goals and 20 assists.

The Penguins also re-signed forward Jonathan Filewich to a two-year contract on Monday. He played five games with the Penguins last season, but spent most of the season with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, where he had 10 goals and 21 assists in 71 games.
