Gospel benefit planned

YOUNGSTOWN — A gospel concert is planned at 7 tonight at Heavenly Place Church of God in Christ, 1350 Katherine Ave., for the benefit of Latanya Foster, who needs a kidney transplant. Featured will be Terry Carter and O.N.E., Mark Jackson and Final Call and Todd Burch and R.O.C.

No new court date set

WARREN — No new court date has been set for Warren Fire Chief Ken Nussle, who is accused of assaulting a former girlfriend.

Both municipal court judges, Terry Ivanchak and Thomas Gysegem, have recused themselves from the trial because they know Nussle and the woman involved in the case. The woman is a former city employee.

Judge Thomas Townley of Niles will preside over the court proceedings.

Assault, robbery probed

WARREN — Police are investigating an assault and robbery on North Park Avenue on Thursday morning.

According to reports, a 45-year-old Glenwood Street man was riding his bike when he was attacked by about nine men. Reports say the men began beating the cyclist, took $40 from his pocket along with his bike then ran off.

The man was taken to Trumbull Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Corps will join parade

SALEM — The Erie Thunderbirds Drum and Bugle Corps that will be in the Grande Parade today will be giving a free performance after the parade.

The parade starts on State Street and will move west through the downtown. The Thunderbirds will perform on South Broadway Avenue at the western end of the parade route for about 20 minutes. The special performance is expected to start about 7:15 p.m.

Bill includes Wick funds

YOUNGSTOWN — A U.S. Senate appropriations committee bill includes $700,000 for Wick Neighbors Inc. to improve infrastructure in the Wick District-Smoky Hollow area. The bill needs approval by the full Senate and then must go to a House-Senate conference committee before it goes to the president to be signed into law.

The organization is seeking to develop a $100 million neighborhood with housing and retail businesses in a 66-acre location bounded by Wick, Andrews, Rayen and Madison avenues.

Obama campaign event

BOARDMAN — The Barack Obama campaign and the Ohio Democratic Party Women’s Caucus is having a house meeting at 5 p.m. Sunday at 4117 Oak Knoll Drive in an effort to involve more women in the Democrat’s candidacy for president.

Hearing rescheduled

MERCER, Pa. — A preliminary hearing for the Hermitage man accused of phoning a bomb threat to the Mercer County Courthouse has been rescheduled.

Officials at District Magistrate Lorinda Hinch’s office said Friday the preliminary hearing for Ronald Garrett, 61, of 902 Biscayne Road, was continued until 10:30 a.m. Aug. 1 so that Garrett can undergo a mental health evaluation. The hearing had been scheduled for Friday morning.

Garrett is charged with threats to use weapons of mass destruction, terroristic threats and criminal use of a communication device, all felonies, for reportedly making the threat that resulted in evacuation of the courthouse the afternoon of July 8.

Farmers’ Market reopens

HOWLAND — The Howland Township Farmers’ Market will reopen today with fresh produce, sweets, breads, crafts and more.

From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., vendors will fill the tables of the open-air gazebo on East Market, by Howland High School, with their locally grown goods. This week’s organic specials include red raspberries, zucchini and summer squash.

The farmers’ market will reopen again Aug. 2, 16 and 30; and Sept. 13 and 27.

Charity motorcycle run

CANFIELD — There will be a charity motorcycle run July 27 for Hospice of the Valley in memory of Dave Grimes of Salem. First bike out will be at 11 a.m. and last bike in will be at 5 p.m. The run begins at Aut Mori Grotto Shangri La, 7209 W. Calla Road. It will include a Chinese auction, 50/50 raffle, food and music.
