Poland girls to play for title


KENTON — The Poland 12-year-old softball team will play Tallmadge today for the state championship in Little League.

Poland edged Tallmadge, 2-1, Thursday, forcing today’s title game. Both teams have one loss in the tournament.

Chloe Bush pitched a complete game with eight strikeouts and just one walk for Poland. She also had a hit and a RBI.

Taylor Miokovic had two hits for Poland, while Leah Howard, Meredith Tesone and Amanda Kabetso had key hits for Poland. Kayli Jack had a 10-pitch at-bat that resulted in a hit-by-pitch that started Poland’s winning rally in the fifth inning.

The winner of today’s game advances to the Central Region tournament in Missouri.

Little League

Canfield posted a 6-4 victory over Poland for the 9-10 year old baseball championship, advancing to the state tournament in Cambridge July 26.

Canfield shut out Boardman West in 11-year old action, 18-0.

In the softball 9-10 championship game, Poland upended Howland 18-5 to advance to state play.

NABF Seniors

STRUTHERS — The National Amateur Baseball Federation Senior (18 under) regional tournament will open play with two games tonight at Cene Park.

There are five teams in the double elimination tournament, with three from the Youngstown Class B League — R J Trucking, Astro Falcons and Rondinelli Tuxedo.

The opening game features R J Trucking against Brownlee Lookouts on Cene 1 at 8 p.m. The Ohio Yankees will play Astro Falcons on Cene 2 at 8 p.m. Rondinelli Tuxedo drew a bye.

The tournament will continue through Sunday with the champion qualifying for the World Series in Jackson, Miss.

NABF Juniors

STRUTHERS — The Astro Falcons built a 6-0 lead after 5 1/2 innings but had to hold on as they edged the Barberton Nomads, 6-5, at Cene Park.

Raul Pizzaro had three hits and drove home a pair of runs while Mark Warchol and Joey Fontana had two hits each for the Falcons. Jacob Dando went the first 5 1/3 innings on the mound as he allowed only one earned run with six strikeouts.

Ian Adair and Andy Kefalos had two hits each for the Nomads.

Livi Steel 4, Northern Ohio Hurricanes 1

Tyler Chapin scattered five hits in going the distance for Livi Steel. Chapin did not allow a hit for the first 4 2/3 innings and struck out four. Livi capitalized on four Hurricane errors to score three unearned runs in the first inning and added a run in the third. Jay Rowland had two hits for Livi.

Rondinelli Tuxedo 13, Kinect Capitals 1

Anthony Raschilla went 4-for-4 with three doubles as Rondinelli pounded out 16 hits.

Jake Double added three hits, while Collin Bowser, Sam Schweiss, and Phil Lipari added two each as every starter had at least one hit for Rondinelli.

Zac Anderson allowed just two hits and struck out six on the mound for the win.

Youngstown Class AA

YOUNGSTOWN — Youngstown Metros scored four runs in the third inning and two in the seventh as it posted a 7-4 victory over Tri-County at Pemberton Park.

Armani Johnson hit a double and two singles and CJ Morris and Dom Silvestri had two hits apiece for the Metros. Gary Boris hit a pair of singles for Tri-County.

Tri-State Collegiate

FOSTORIA — Joe Iacobucci and Tom Clayton each hit a home run and single, Anthony Porter hit a home run and Rich Tisone hit a double and single in the Metros 5-4 victory over the Fostoria Monarchs.

Fostoria won the second game, 8-7.

Matt Yarab hit two home runs and drove in four runs for the Metros. Anthony Porter hit a pair of singles.

Warren AA

WARREN — Nick Zajaczkowski had three hits, including a double, and Josh Miller hit a two-run homer to lead Cleats Club Seat Grille over Elite Shockers, 12-6, in the Warren AA League.

Miller had two hits and three RBIs, while Andrew Beachy added a double and three singles. Anthony Maruca singled twice and Mike Swoboda, the winning pitcher, also singled twice.

Craig Dobos and Jake Kakavros had doubles for Elite, and Cory Hinzman singled twice. Dobos also had two RBIs.

Flex Strut 12, Mahoning Valley Knights 4

Steve Liebel, Jim Skiffey and Derek Stanton had two hits apiece for Flex Strut, while Ryan Walters, Adam Morgan and Bill Eddy had two RBIs apiece. Liebel, John Thompson and Stanton all doubled.

Andy Todor had two RBIs for the Knights.

P.I. I. Express 8,

Trumbull County Predators 4

Dave Patrick was the winning pitcher, with two strikeouts in six innings, for the Express. He also singled twice, while Tom Senich tripled and singled and Tom Jones singled twice. Brett Grabman had two RBIs.

For the Predators, Nick Setting hit a double and two RBIs, and Joe Hardy also drove in a pair.
