A 13-year-old girl who drove her two sisters about 250 miles from Fresno County, Calif., to Santa Barbara told Fresno County sheriff’s investigators that she got lost shortly after her journey began, and just continued to drive.

The girl, Kristy Harrison, and her uncle had talked about her chores before she drove off, but she didn’t characterize the discussion as confrontational, said deputy sheriff Chris Curtice.

Meanwhile, Michael Wilson, the uncle and guardian of the sisters, said he is still trying to figure out why his niece took the road trip.

Wilson said Wednesday he hasn’t had much time to talk about the incident with his 13-year-old niece since the girls returned to Fresno County on Tuesday night.

Wilson said he and Kristy had discussed her house chores about midday Monday. He then left their home for a short while. When he returned, Kristy, her two sisters — Destiny Wilson, 7, and Trinity Carroll, 2 — and his Ford Taurus station wagon were gone.

A Santa Barbara County deputy found the girls unharmed Tuesday.

“No argument, no nothing at all,” Wilson said. “That’s why it came as such a shock.”

Kristy used a Shell credit card she had taken from home for gas in Southern California. The Taurus was equipped with child safety seats.

Wilson said no relatives live in Santa Barbara.

There were no problems at home, no boyfriend troubles, and Kristy recently had “a normal visitation” with her mother, who lives in Fresno and is Wilson’s sister, he said.

No charges will be filed against Kristy, Curtice said.
