ALLIANCE — Parents and students interested in getting some free guidance in applying for college financial aid can visit one of several regional locations participating in the national College Goal Sunday program Feb. 10.

Mount Union College here, Kent State University, the University of Akron, the Cleveland Scholarship Programs and the Ashtabula County Joint Vocational School are among the 38 Ohio sites lined up for the program.

The workshops will generally begin at 2 p.m. and run about two hours.

Participants can met with advisers free of change to get advice on how to finance their education, and volunteers will be on hand to assist with filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form.

“In Northeast Ohio, the rising cost of tuition is a major barrier to college access,” said Tina Milano, CEO of Cleveland Scholarship Programs.

Students are encouraged to register online before the event at www.ohiocollegegoalsunday.org and can pick the site they plan to attend. Online registrations will close Feb. 8.

Workshop sign-ins begin at 1 p.m. on the day of the event.

Parents and students should bring their latest tax information and/or pay stub from the previous hear to complete the FAFSA form.

A complete list of other necessary documents is available at the registration Web site.

College Goal Sunday began in Indiana in 1989 to help families in that state find ways to finance their children’s college education.

The popularity of the program has grown and 33 of the 50 states will conduct the program Feb. 10 this year.
