6 take citizen oath

YOUNGSTOWN — Six people became U.S. citizens in a Thursday naturalization ceremony before Judge Mark A. Belinky of Mahoning County Probate Court.

Their names, hometowns and countries of origin are: Neida Abdel Qader Abu Hashim, Youngstown, Palestine; My Lien Thi Hoang, Boardman, Vietnam; Mia Diana Bobina, Youngstown, Romania; Walid Hassan Elshalabi, Boardman, Egypt; Anastasios Christos Efthimiou, Campbell, Greece; and Aline Jamil Saab Chahine, Canfield, Lebanon.

Flood-risk open house

AUSTINTOWN — Representatives from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency will be hold a flood-risk information open house from 4:30 to 7 30 p.m. Tuesday at the Austintown Township Building, 82 Ohltown Road.

The open house will provide county residents with an opportunity to review a recently completed preliminary flood insurance study and its preliminary Flood Insurance Rate Maps.

The FIS and FIRMS provide base flood information, delineate areas subject to significant flood hazards within the county, and offer information public officials may use when permitting development of a flood plain.

Teacher’s suit alleges
she was slandered

WARREN – A teacher at the Trumbull Career and Technical Center filed a lawsuit Friday in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court charging the center’s superintendent and a director slandered her.

The lawsuit was filed by Bobbe W. Isabella of Deer Creek Trail, Cortland, against Superintendent Wayne McClain and Karen Johnson, director of secondary education.

The complaint says that on March 27, 2007, the defendants told at least five students that Isabella was a liar and made other false, malicious and defamatory remarks. Isabella is seeking at least $100,000 in compensatory damages and an unspecified amount of punitive damages.

McClain did not return a telephone call seeking comment.

Handgun stolen

YOUNGSTOWN — Police said a .380-caliber handgun was stolen from a home in the 100 block of North Portland Avenue.

The resident told police he left home Monday and found that his home had been burglarized when he came back around 6:20 p.m. Thursday. Police said entry to the house was gained through a basement window.

Police to get grant
to target aggression

NESHANNOCK — The Neshannock Police Department has received a $11,200 grant to fight aggressive driving.

The grant was provided by Buckle Up Pennsylvania through the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration. It will provide for increased patrols in high-collision areas, targeting aggressive drivers.

The department has also received a grant aimed at increasing seat-belt use. Additional patrols will be used to increase enforcement of seat-belt violations, as well as increase education and public awareness efforts.

SCOPE open house

HOWLAND — An open house for all Trumbull County residents will be at Howland SCOPE from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday at 8273 High St.

On-site service includes prescription drugs, social services, tax preparation, day care, chore in-home services and information on activities, classes, trips and lecture/lunches provide by the six centers in operation within the Trumbull County line.

Information on reverse mortgages will be available. Living wills can be done and notarized.

MetroParks job fair

YOUNGSTOWN — Mill Creek MetroParks will have a job fair for seasonal part-time positions from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Davis Center in Fellows Riverside Gardens.

The participating departments include golf, horticulture, maintenance, police (Ohio Peace Officers Training Academy certificate required) and recreation.
