Howland woman to participate in Miss Ohio pageant in June


HOWLAND — Heather Wells, 18, daughter of Dennis and Andrea Wells of Howland, was recently crowned Miss Maple City 2008 in Norwalk, Ohio.

The Miss Maple City Scholarship Pageant is an official preliminary to the Miss America Pageant. Wells received a $1,000 college scholarship. She was chosen by a panel of seven judges based on her scores in a private interview, swim suit, evening gown, talent competitions and on stage question.

She was crowned by the reigning Miss Ohio 2007, Roberta Camp, who was also Miss Maple City 2007. This will be Wells’ first trip to the Miss Ohio stage in Mansfield in June.

Wells is a freshman at Youngstown State University, majoring in telecommunications. She is on the dean’s list and a member of Delta Zeta National Sorority.

She is also the president of the Trumbull County Junior Fair Board and the Silver Claws 4-H Cat Club. She is a 2007 graduate of Howland High School. She received seven varsity letters at Howland during her junior and senior years for choir, band, track, cheerleading, forensics, academics and as a majorette.

She was ranked ninth in the state in dramatic interpretation at the state speech tournament. She also qualified for the National Forensics League Tournament, held in Wichita, Kan., in June 2007, where she finished in the top 100 in the nation.

Wells also recently competed in the Miss Ohio Teen Pageant, where she was named first runner-up. The Miss Teen USA pageant is part of the Miss Universe Organization owned by Donald Trump. The pageant was held at the Vern Riffe Center at Shawnee State University in Portsmouth, Ohio.

Wells is an official WFMJ Today model and attends North-Mar Church.
