Poland has 1st unbeaten season

Ben Umbel, Ben Donlow and Anthony DeFelice led Poland to its 20th win.

SALEM — Ben Umbel scored 13 points and made 14 steals Saturday as the Poland High boys basketball team completed its first unbeaten regular season with a 95-64 victory over Salem.

“It’s awesome for our kids,” Poland coach Ken Grisdale said. “They’ve worked so hard in committing to a new system. So to get this reward is awesome.”

Ben Donlow led the Bulldogs (20-0, 14-0 Metro Athletic Conference) in scoring with 17 points. He also pulled down 11 rebounds. Anthony Defelice contributed 15 points and four assists.

Also scoring in double figures were David White with 13, David Baker with 11, and Bryan Kosec and Luke Wollet with 10 apiece.

Leading the Quakers were Geno Paquinetti with 19 points, Austen Hutton with 13 and Nick Anderson with 10.

Chaney 65, East Palestine 50

YOUNGSTOWN — Tyray Helms scored 31 points. He also grabbed 11 rebounds and had 10 assists, seven blocked shots and four steals in leading Chaney to victory.

The Cowboys (5-14) rushed out to a 24-8 lead in the first quarter and they increased that margin to 41-18 by intermission.

Myke Parker chipped in with 15 points. J.C. Bollinger and Nick Dicello paced the Bulldogs (14-6) with 18 and 11 points, respectively.

Niles 68, Struthers 59

NILES — Dan Rosenberger scored 22 points and Niles outscored Struthers 25-14 in the fourth quarter.

Ryan Frantz added 16 points and Larry Sussman scored 15 for the Red Dragons (9-11, 6-8 MAC).

Struthers (6-14, 2-12) was led by Jordan Morell, who scored 28 points. Keith Karas added 16 points.

Newton Falls 52, Lakeview 37

NEWTON FALLS — Cameron McCleary scored 12 points, Todd Medallis 11, Marcus Fowler 10 and Brian Sole nine on three 3-point goals to lead Newton Falls ( 16-4, 13-1 Trumbull Athletic Conference), in the final regular-season game Newton Falls previously had clinched the TAC championship.

Robert Franks had 10 points for Lakeview (12-8, 9-5 TAC).

Champion 69, Liberty 48

CHAMPION — Kris Wildman scored 16 points, Joe Cvengros 14 and Caleb Wright 12 to lead Champion (15-5, 9-5 TAC), which took a 33-15 halftime lead.

Floyd Showers netted 22 points to spark Liberty (6-14, 5-9 TAC).

Youngstown Christian 57, Lowellville 52

LOWELLVILLE — The Eagles (13-6) held a 45-44 lead heading into the final eight minutes of the game and outscored the Rockets (4-16) 12-8 for the victory Friday night.

Olonzo Johnson sparked Youngstown Christian with 19 points. David Colbert added 13 and Caleb Yanno had 10. Jim Sudon paced the Rockets with 25 points.

Wellsville 92, Beaver Local 80

WELLSVILLE — The Tigers (19-1) built a 72-52 lead at the end of three quarters and the Beavers weren’t able to catch up.

Zane Carter, D.J. Douglas, Jaimon Edison and Jeremy Carter sparked the Tigers with 23, 21, 18 and 10 points respectively.

Ethan Russell paced the Beavers (2-18) with 24 points. Scott Kreefer added 19 and Shawn Mercer had 18.
