Accused of assault, board member resigns

Saturday, February 16, 2008

BUTLER, Pa. (AP) — A Butler County school board member accused of assaulting a woman at his tavern has resigned.

Mark Rowe of Saxonburg says the allegations against him were distracting the South Butler school board.

Police say Rowe and the woman were at Rowe’s Tavern last month when Rowe refused to allow the woman to leave.

After the two fell to the floor, Rowe is accused of picking the woman up by her neck and hitting her in the face.

Rowe, who also is a lawyer, faces a preliminary hearing Feb. 27 on aggravated assault and other charges. Rowe, who resigned Wednesday, says he is innocent.

The school board is accepting applications to fill Rowe’s vacancy and expects to announce his replacement next month.
