The Community Foundation of Western Pennsylvania and Eastern Ohio has made it easy for those wishing to set up their own foundations.

kOrganizers name the foundation and decide its specific purpose.

kThe proposed foundation’s plan for giving must then be submitted to the board of directors of the community foundation, based in Sharon, Pa. Executive Director Larry Haynes said each subsidiary foundation is required to demonstrate a “charitable impact” before the board grants its approval.

kOnce approved, the subsidiary foundation does not have to worry about separate tax returns. It is classified under the tax identification number of the parent foundation.

kThe subsidiary community foundations are free to conduct fund-raising activities unless the foundation has been established from a donor’s personal funds.

kAnyone interested in forming a foundation can contact Haynes through the organization’s Web site — www.sv-foundation.org — or by calling (866) 901-7204.
