Ursuline has good day vs. Knights

Campbell beat Struthers to improve to 5-1 — its best start in years.

YOUNGSTOWN — Junior Lucia Petrus hit a 3-pointer with five seconds left to lift the Ursuline High girls basketball team to a 50-49 win over visiting Akron Hoban on Saturday.

Petrus finished with 15 points for the Irish (5-2), who have won five straight games. Dominique Jenkins added 15 points and 11 rebounds.

Hoban’s Taneka Lewis missed a two-point attempt at the buzzer. The back-and-forth game featured 51 free throws between the teams.

Rachel Tecca scoerd 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the Knights (5-2). Krissy Sokol added 13 points.

Canton McKinley 50, Boardman 26

BOARDMAN — Sydnee Penn had 14 points and Ameryst Alston 13 to lead Canton McKinley, as the Bulldogs capitalized on the Spartans’ inaccurate shooting from the field in a Federal League game.

McKinley (4-1, 2-0 FL) led by 19-13 at the half then outscored Boardman the rest of the way, 30-13.

The Spartans made only eight of 34 from the field.

Monica Touvelle managed eight points and three assists while Erin Brown had eight rebounds to lead Boardman (4-2, 1-1 FL).

Campbell 50, Struthers 53

CAMPBELL — Campbell, off to its best start in several years, rallied from a 39-36 deficit after three quarters.

Tashira Uceta scored 12 of her 18 points during the final period, helping the Red Devils (5-1) roll to an 11-point lead with three minutes remaining.

Uceta also had six steals and five steals. Aria Grhim paced the team with 19 points and she had five steals.

Nate’Tay Jones-Logan added nine points and she had four steals. Ieasha Moses grabbed 10 rebounds while Sarah Such, 5-4 senior guard, pulled down seven.

Dana Matthews and Helen Hird each scored 16 points for the Wildcats (2-4).

Springfield 61, Poland 53

NEW MIDDLETOWN — Springfield connected on 28 of 38 free throws and outscored Poland 23-12 in the final quarter to post the victory.

Andria Lyons led the Tigers with 18 points, while Ashley Davis added 15 and Rachael Kennedy 14.

Liberty 57, Girard 23

LIBERTY — Chakieyla Merriweather scored 13 points to lead a balanced attack as Liberty (3-5) took a 29-9 halftime lead and cruised the rest of the way.

Emily Smerchansky and Katelynne Brainard each scored five for Girard.

Newton Falls 53, Hubbard 48

NEWTON FALLS — Kelsey McGregor, Blaine Chapman and Destiny Prusky scored 51 of the Tigers’ points as they helped Newton Falls record its sixth victory in seven starts.

McGregor led the way with 19 points. Chapman had 18 and Prusky 14.

Cora Julian and Brittany Bullock scored 17 and 13 points, respectively, for the Eagles.

Poland was led by Missy Haug with 18 points.

Brookfield 44, Lakeview 27

CORTLAND — Brookfield fell behind 14-9 in the first quarter, but then held Lakeview to just 13 points over the next three quarters to roll to victory.

Kodi Brenner led the Warriors (3-3) with 13 points and Paige Wallace added 13. Brenner also had 13 rebounds.

Casey Watson led the Bulldogs (3-3) with 10 points.

Canton South 49, West Branch 30

CANTON — Alva Greene had 12 points and Brittany Lyon 11 with eight rebounds to pace undefeated Canton South in a Northeastern Buckeye Conference game.

Shaver Robinson and Kati Schneider added 10 points apiece to bolster Canton South (7-0, 4-0 NBC), which jumped out to a 25-10 halftime lead.

Emilee Zets, Lacey Sanor and Andrea Wingett had six points apiece and Michelle Sosnick nine rebounds to lead West Branch (4-2, 2-2 NBC).
