HANOVERTON — A $2,500 reward is being offered for information in the shooting death of “an exceptionally friendly dog,” its owner said.

Veterinarian David Smith said Tuesday that his dog, Lyle, was shot at the back of his property about 3 p.m. Dec. 2.

Smith said he had been working outside and heard the shot.

Another of his dogs that was with Lyle came back with its tail between its legs.

On Dec. 13, Smith’s son received a call about the dog’s body being found near Mountz and Rochester roads. That’s about five miles from Smith’s residence.

Lyle’s dog collar that had his name and a phone number was missing.

Smith was away, and his son buried the dog. Smith decided to move the body to a better location. He examined the body and determined that the dog had been shot from 5 to 8 feet away with a shotgun slug.

Lyle was probably waiting to be petted by a hunter, Smith said.

No one had permission to hunt on Smith’s property or his neighbor’s property, Smith added.
