YOUNGSTOWN — A day after an elderly McGuffey Road woman died, her daughter discovered the house had been broken into.

The 80-year-old woman’s daughter told police the house was intact on Wednesday but when she went back to the house on Thursday she discovered the side door wide open.

Missing from the house are two TVs, a lawn trimmer, CD and DVD players, copper pipes from the basement and more.

Man robbed while unloading his car

BOARDMAN — A man with a bandanna covering his face robbed an 80-year-old man of $16, his wallet and credit cards.

The victim told police he arrived at his Glenwood Avenue apartment about 10 p.m. Thursday and was unloading his vehicle in the carport when he heard someone behind him.

He turned and saw a man with a red bandanna across his face brandishing what the victim believed was a handgun and then a knife. The robber demanded money and the victim gave him $16, but the robber wasn’t satisfied so the victim gave him his wallet and its contents. The robber then backed off, ordering the victim not to move, and fled.

Woman attacked by friend

WARREN — A 50-year-old city woman reported she was cut on the face and arm by a woman wielding a piece of broken mirror in an apartment on Garden Street Northwest Wednesday evening.

The woman said she was visiting a friend when the woman attacked her at about 7:15 p.m.

Ambulance personnel said the victim would need stitches, but the woman refused to be taken to the hospital.

Men attacked in car

FARRELL, Pa. — Dustin Sheakley Deitz, 19, of Washington Street was charged Thursday with two counts of robbery and simple assault in a robbery that occurred in the 700 block of Sharon-New Castle Road at 8:55 p.m. Tuesday.

Two Hermitage men told Southwest Mercer County Regional Police they were sitting in a car in a parking lot when two men approached, one at each car window. The men reached in and took some of the victims’ belongings, then began to punch them, police said.

One of the victims was treated at UPMC Horizon, Farrell, for injuries to his face.

Deitz was held in the Mercer County Jail after failing to post a $10,000 bond at his arraignment, police said.

A juvenile petition has been filed against a second suspect, police said.

Truck hits side of jail

YOUNGSTOWN — The east side of the misdemeanant jail at 360 W. Commerce St. was slightly damaged around 12:20 a.m. Friday when a black GMC truck drove into it, police said.

The driver, Jeffrey Hardie, 23, of Sunnybrooke Drive was charged with driving under the influence, failure to maintain reasonable control and failure to stop after an accident.

The truck, not owned by the driver, ended up at the DeYor Performing Arts Center on Symphony Place, not far from the jail. Deputies stopped Hardie and his two passengers walking near the truck.

Hardie was given a blood-alcohol concentration test.

The occupants of the truck told police they made a left turn onto West Commerce and slid into the building because of wet roads. Hardie said he left the scene because he was trying to get a tow truck for his friend’s vehicle.

Fire damages building

YOUNGSTOWN — Fire damage was set at $130,000 after a fire at 12:45 a.m. Friday at 838 E. Midlothian Blvd., a three-story apartment building on the South Side.

Fire started in the kitchen of a third-floor apartment. No injuries were reported, and the cause is under investigation.

The Red Cross was called to the building to determine the necessity of housing displaced residents.

Tax courses offered

YOUNGSTOWN — Area H R Block offices will have open houses from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. today at which visitors can learn about important tax law changes and H R Block income tax courses.

The offices are at 5580 Youngstown-Warren Road, Niles; 453 Boardman-Poland Road, Boardman; and 2419 E. State St., Hermitage, Pa.
