Anderson is back after concussion

The quarterback appeared in his first practice since a concussion Aug. 18.

BEREA — Browns starting quarterback Derek Anderson made an appearance on the practice field Tuesday, his first since suffering a concussion Aug. 18 in a preseason game versus the New York Giants.

He did some throwing at the beginning of practice while wearing his helmet, and left the field once team drills began.

Brady Quinn again took snaps with the first-team offense and is expected to start Thursday night in the preseason finale against the Chicago Bears. Coach Romeo Crennel said it is unlikely Anderson would play.

Quinn could play as much as a half before giving way to third-stringer Ken Dorsey, Crennel said.

Anderson is one of six starters who didn’t play Saturday against the Detroit Lions and aren’t expected to play Thursday.

Receiver Braylon Edwards (foot), running back Jamal Lewis (hamstring), safety Sean Jones (knee), Brodney Pool (concussion), linebacker Willie McGinest (groin) and Anderson didn’t participate in team drills Monday and Tuesday. Neither did kick returner Joshua Cribbs, who also missed the Lions game and likely won’t step on the field against Chicago.

Wide receiver Joe Jurevicius will miss the first six weeks of the regular season while he recovers from knee surgery.

The Browns placed Jurevicius on the physically-unable-to-perform list Tuesday.

Jurevicius had swelling and discomfort in his right knee related to a previous operation and needed another procedure in June to further clean it out.

“He feels good about being able to rehab and come along, so we are giving him a little bit more time to get ready,” Crennel said.
