Scrappers rally past State College for 8-7 win

Mahoning Valley had to overcome a 7-3 deficit to beat the Spikes.

NILES — Wins haven’t come easy for the Mahoning Valley Scrappers.

“The wins have been few and far between lately,” said Scrappers manager Travis Fryman after Mahoning Valley (27-37) rallied with four runs in the sixth inning to overcome the State College Spikes 8-7 Monday night at Eastwood field.

“Anytime we get a win it’s pretty nice,” Fryman said.

“I tell the guys every time I’ve never seen an ugly hit or an ugly win.”

Mahoning Valley committed two costly errors and Scrappers’ pitchers walked 5 State College batters to fall behind 7-3 before rallying to grab the win.

The Scrappers scored one run in the fifth to pull to within 7-4 after a walk to Brock Simpson.

The first baseman came around to score after a passed ball and an RBI single by Walter Diaz.

Mahoning Valley then parlayed five straight singles, including two infield hits, into four runs in the sixth inning to overtake the Spikes.

Ryan Blair led off with a single and advanced to third on a single by Cord Phelps.

Blair scored on a wild pitch before Tim Fedroff got the third of his four hits on the night to move Phelps to third.

An infield single by Lonnie Chisenhall scored Phelps and Simpson’s infield single plated Fedroff with the go-ahead run.

The Scrappers got a great effort from the bullpen to keep the game within reach and eventually close it out.

Austin Creps came in for starter Kaimi Mead who had give up three runs in four innings.

Creps (2-5) picked up the win despite giving up four runs in the fifth inning, although only one was earned thanks to some sloppy fielding by the Scrappers defense.

Creps settled down to pitch a scoreless sixth and Brian Grening pitched two innings of one-hit baseball.

Brad Hinkle came on in the ninth and retired the side in order to pick up his second save of the season.

“The bullpen did a great job,” Fryman said. “We don’t get to say that too much about the ’pen this year.

“Brian Grening came in and threw the ball real well and Hinkle came in and did a great job. The bullpen was good today.”

The Spikes (13-47), who have the worst record in the New-York Penn League, did a great job of getting off to a good start following Sunday’s 10-5 win over the Scrappers.

State College touched up Mead for three runs in the second inning on four hits, including a bases loaded double by David Rubinstein.

The Scrappers got a solo run in the third on a fielders choice RBI by Simpson and two more runs in the fourth to tie the game.

Robbie Alcombrack scored on an RBI single by Phelps and Blair scored on a single by Fedroff.

Fedroff, a late signee from the University of Michigan, raised his average to over .380 with his 4-for-4 night at the plate.
