YOUNGSTOWN — Youngstown City Council has selected Gerrald A. Fordham of Lanterman Avenue to fill an eight-month vacancy on the city’s park and recreation commission.

Fordham is a child-care worker and group life manager with Mahoning County Children Services. He’s worked at the county agency since March 1986.

Council chose to not reappoint Michael James to the commission when his term expired Dec. 31. The position on the five-person board remained empty until the Fordham appointment.

Evidence of shooting

YOUNGSTOWN — A large shooting scene was found in the 400 block of Crandall Avenue on the North Side around 10:30 p.m. Sunday.

The victim, Darry B. Woods, 18, of West Dennick Avenue, had been shot several times in the back and was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center by private car before police arrived. His condition was not immediately available.

Police towed a Chevrolet Malibu from the hospital that had been shot at. A 1994 Buick Century parked on Crandall had its rear window shot out and bullet holes in the trunk lid and roof above the driver’s seat. A witness said the car’s driver left it parked before the shooting.

Four handgun shell casings were found in the street in front of 447 Crandall, and two rifle shell casings were on the sidewalk. Two rifle casings were found in the front yard of 447 Crandall and three more in the devil strip. Four handgun casings and a large amount of broken auto glass lay in the street between 439 and 443 Crandall, police said.

Sex abuse is alleged

PERRY — A 13-year-old West Virginia boy has been allowed to return home with his parents while police investigate an allegation the teen performed oral sex on a 5-year-old boy late Saturday. The family members were at a gathering at a home on Indiana Avenue, said Roy Stone, township police chief.

The alleged abuse was reported to authorities by an adult about 9:15 p.m. The teen was taken to the Louis Tobin Attention Center in Lisbon.

Denise Weingart, an assistant prosecutor assigned to county juvenile court, said the abuse also included inappropriate touching.

No charges have been filed. Weingart said the parents agreed to appear at any future court proceedings.

YOUNGSTOWN — “Unifying Diversities” is the topic of a program planned at 7:30 p.m. today in Peaberry’s in Kilcawley Center at Youngstown State University. Participants also may watch the Democratic National Convention.
