2008 Outstanding Youth Mahoning County Junior Fair

The 2008 Mahoning County Junior Fair Outstanding Youth will be recognized in a ceremony at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Canfield Fair, which begins tomorrow. The 14 candidates were selected for their leadership skills, community service and special achievements through Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Farm Bureau, FFA, 4-H, Grange and Campfire. Two of the candidates will be chosen to represent Mahoning County as the Junior Fair Outstanding Youth of 2008.

Elizabeth Wyss, of Beloit, representing FFA:

She has earned her green hand degree, chapter degree and has also earned the Small Animal Proficiency Award. Other activities include 4-H, Farm Bureau, Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, Environmental Club, National Honors Society, Future Teachers of America and Junior Fair Board.

Jessica Ricker, of Austintown, representing Camp Fire USA:

She is the president of Teens in Action Club and has won the Melanie Stephenson award for an outstanding pre-fair workers display at the Ohio State Fair. Ricker was section leader in the Austintown Fitch High School Marching Band and has won the Barry Smart award for extra service to the band. Other activities include, National Honor Society, Latin club, Marching, Symphonic and Jazz Band. Ricker is a freshman at the University of Akron, studying biology and specializing in zoology.

Amelia Shrader, of Berlin Center, representing Grange:

She has been an active member of Grange for 13 years. Other activities include, 4-H, where she is the current president of the Western Reserve Rangers, 4-H Ambassador, member of the state teen council, 4-H Carteens instructor and a member of the Mahoning County Fashion Board. Shrader is a freshman at Hiram College studying nursing.

Amanda Smith, of Salem, representing FFA:

She is the current president and former secretary of FFA. She was chosen as outstanding freshman, sophomore and junior. Other activities include, president of Goshen Good Growers 4-H Club. Smith is a senior at West Branch High School and plans to attend Bowling Green University, where she will major in accounting.

Amanda Majirsky, of Berlin Center, representing Grange:

She has held many leadership positions for Grange, participated in Grange dinners, and assisted with food drives and other community activities. Other activities include 4-H, where she’s won awards for goat, lamb and poultry projects. Majirsky is a senior at Western Reserve High School and plans to attend college for nursing or psychology.

Gabrielle Wilson, of New Springfield, representing 4-H:

She was the winner of rabbit showmanship, and has attended the Ohio State Fair to show rabbits and goats. She’s won overall champion at state, reserve grand champion for junior dairy goat, reserve grand champion for rabbit, and second Best in Show at state for her rabbits. Wilson is a senior at Springfield Local and plans to attend Ohio State University, where she will major in veterinary science.

Kathryn Phillips, of Salem, representing 4-H:

She is the current vice president of Village Varieties and Mahoning County Goat Herders and attended the 4-H National Dairy Bowl contest in Louisville, Ky., as part of the 2008 team. Phillips is the current Mahoning County Dairy Princess. Other activities include, 2008 youth counselor at Camp Whitewood, Spring Dairy Expo, Farm Bureau Youth and Mahoning County Junior Fair Board. Phillips is a senior at West Branch High School and plans to attend college for engineering.

Hannah Zimmerman, of Lowellville, representing Farm Bureau:

She is the vice president of Farm Bureau Youth and has won the state spotlight for safety skit two years in a row and state scrapbook awards three years in a row. Other activities include, 4-H club and Mahoning County Junior Fair Board secretary. Zimmerman is a senior at Lowellville High School and plans to attend college for veterinary science or zoology.

Sarah Young, of Canfield, representing Girl Scouts:

She is working on her Gold Award, Girl Scouting’s highest honor. Other activities include Concert, Marching, Jazz and Pep band, choir, Drama Club, SADD, track and powderpuff. Young has earned the Semper Fidelis Award for Musical Excellence, Music Merit Award, Drum Major, and is a 4-year letter winner in track. She is a graduate of Western Reserve High School and attending Ashland University for pre-med biology and minoring in forensic science, with the goal of becoming a forensic pathologist.

Megan Day, of Berlin Center, representing Girl Scouts.

She has earned the Pope Pius XII Award, the Bronze Award, the Silver Award and is working on her Gold Award. Other activities include, 4-H, Western Reserve Rangers, Mahoning County Fashion Board, Camp Whitewood counselor, 2007 Royal Court. Day is a graduate of Cardinal Mooney High School and is attending Saint Mary’s College in Notre Dame, Ind., majoring in biochemistry.

Andrew Baltes, of North Jackson, representing Farm Bureau:

He has been a member of Farm Bureau for four years, has attended several camps for Farm Bureau Youth and helped with multiple community service projects. Baltes is a freshman at Ohio Agricultural Technical Institute, majoring in construction science and applied science in crop management.

Kevin Allcorn, of Berlin Center, representing Boy Scouts:

He is currently a Life Scout Rank and has completed all of the requirements to earn his Eagle Scout Rank. Allcorn has held the Senior Patrol Leader position twice. Other activities include Order of the Arrow and Philmont High Adventure Camp in New Mexico. Allcorn graduated from Western Reserve High School and plans to join the military.

Jonathan Wilson, of North Benton, representing 4-H:

He is president of Village Varieties for the second year and a junior adviser. Other activities include, showing market steer, market hog and beef breeding, varsity wrestling, varsity football, and North Benton Presbyterian Church Youth Group. Wilson is a junior at West Branch High School and plans to attend college to major in veterinary science.

Nicholas Graf, of Berlin Center, representing Boy Scouts:

He has been involved in Boy Scouts for eight years and completed his Eagle Scout requirements. Other activities include Western Reserve Marching Band and National Honor Society. Graf is a graduate of Western Reserve High School and is currently attending the University of Akron, majoring in biomedical engineering.
