Soccer team falls

YOUNGSTOWN — The YSU soccer team opened the season with a 1-0 loss to Kent State.

The Penguins held the Golden Flashes for 79 minutes of play before Kelly Heaton scored.

In the second half a Kent shot was saved by goalkeeper Mariah Snyder (Ursuline High). However, Heaton quickly regained control of the ball and took a shot that slipped past Snyder give Kent the 1-0 advantage.

In her second career start as goalkeeper, Snyder collected seven saves.

Winner is winner

MORGANTOWN, W. Va. — Youngstowner Brandon Winner won a four-round decision over Matt Clark of Morgantown during the co-feature of a professional boxing card over the weekend.

Clark, in his pro debut, took a standing eight-count in the second round.

Football tickets

YOUNGSTOWN — Tickets for Mooney’s football game Saturday in Canton will be on sale during school hours Tuesday through Friday in the main office.

Saturday at 5 p.m., Mooney will play Kentucky’s Covington Catholic at Fawcett Stadium. It’s one of four games being played that day.

Ticket prices are $14 for adults and $10 for students. Tickets are good for all four games, including the Howland-Klein Forest (Texas) game at 11 a.m.

DeFrank now 9-4

ZANESVILLE — Girard’s Alecia DeFrank KO’d Kelly Daniels of Hilliard at 1:29 of the first round during a scheduled four-round fight in the 125-pound class of a 19-bout amateur card at Philo High School on Saturday.

DeFrank improved to (9-4) in the fight against Daniels (3-1). It was the fourth knockout for DeFrank, trained by Louie O’Neil of Girard.

Dorsey selected

WARREN — Mike Dorsey of Warren Harding High was named the Steel Valley Conference football player of the week.

A 6-2, 199-pound runningback, Dorsey carried 10 times for 120 yards Saturday and scored on bursts of 10 and 55 yards in a 24-9 win over Shaker Heights.

PARAMUS, N.J. — Vijay Singh won The Barclays for a record fourth time Sunday, matching Sergio Garcia with a long birdie putt on the first hole of a playoff and finishing off the Spaniard with another birdie on the second extra hole.

The 45-year-old Fijian closed with a 1-under 70 to match Garcia (70) and Kevin Sutherland (68) at 8-under 276 on the sun-baked Ridgewood Country Club course.

PORTLAND, Ore. — Cristie Kerr sank a 15-foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole, defeating Helen Alfredsson and Sophie Gustafson to win the Safeway Classic at Columbia Edgewater Country Club.

Kerr, Alfredsson and Gustafson finished 54 regulation holes at 13-under par 203. Alfredsson and Gustafson missed slightly longer birdie putts during the playoff before Kerr made hers.

It was Kerr’s 11th career victory on the LPGA Tour.

SNOQUALMIE, Wash. — Tom Kite surged past Scott Simpson with three birdies in four holes on the back nine and finished at 14-under to win his second Boeing Classic title.

It’s the first victory for Kite since winning the 2006 Boeing Classic in a playoff over Keith Fergus, and the 10th Champions Tour title in his career.

PINEHURST, N.C. — Danny Lee became the U.S. Amateur’s youngest champion, supplanting Tiger Woods by holding off Drew Kittleson 5 and 4.

The 18-year, 1-month-old Lee frittered away most of a 6-hole lead before regaining control with consecutive birdies midway through his second trip around Pinehurst’s No. 2 course.

Castroneves gets win

SONOMA, Calif. — Helio Castroneves finally broke through for a victory Sunday at Infineon Raceway, winning for the first time in 30 races.

More important, the Team Penske star, frustrated until now with seven runner-up finishes this season, kept alive his hopes for an IndyCar Series championship as points leader Scott Dixon had one of his worst days of the season, finishing 12th.
