roundup \ News and notes

Lots of scores: The girls at Canfield have 18 goals in two games — a 9-1 win over Warren JFK and a 9-0 victory over Ursuline. Substituting one letter in the spelling of the two words (goals for golds), the Cardinals are pace to top Olympic hero Michael Phelps (eight medals).

FieldTurf: Because of the foul weather that turns area grass soccer fields into mud during October, several schools now play their games on FieldTurf. It’s a welcome change. Poland High added an artificial turf this season, joining Canfield, Fitch, Mollenkopf, Girard and East Palestine.

Schedules: To advance deep into the state tournament, successful teams play an aggressive schedule. Other teams believe that it’s better to rack up an impressive record. That’s like playing the Washington Generals with Red Klotz in goal. (Klotz faced the Harlem Globetrotters about 10,000 times and rarely won).

Newspaper coverage: Report soccer scores and highlights right after the game to sports@vindy.com. Don’t forget to include highlights of the opponent.
