Presidential race \ Ohio poll
The Columbus Dispatch poll was conducted by mail among 2,102 registered voters between Aug. 12 and Thursday. It was completed before Barack Obama announced U.S. Sen. Joseph Biden as his vice presidential running mate. The margin of sampling error was plus or minus 2.2 percentage points.

OF INTEREST
Obama leads McCain among independents — 37 percent to 33 percent — with 4 percent supporting Barr, 1 percent for Nader and 25 percent undecided.
McCain is stronger among members of his own party than Obama is among Democrats, with 86 percent of Republicans saying they support McCain while 74 percent of Democrats said they intend to vote for Obama. Seventeen percent of Democrats and 7 percent of Republicans said they were undecided.
Obama gets support only from 55 percent of those who voted for Democrat Ted Strickland for governor in 2006. Twenty-four percent of Strickland voters say they favor McCain and 18 percent are undecided.
Obama leads among 18-24 year-olds (53 percent to McCain’s 31 percent) and 25-34 year-olds (46 percent to McCain’s 39 percent). McCain leads among 35-44 year-olds (46 percent to Obama’s 36 percent) and those 75 or older (52 percent to Obama’s 28 percent).
