Man shot in face

YOUNGSTOWN — Paul L. Smith, 50, of Artmer Drive, Austintown, was listed in critical condition at St. Elizabeth Health Center after being shot at about 1:50 a.m. Sunday in a parking lot in the 1800 block of Donald Street.

An officer returning to the Youngstown Police Department was approached by the victim, who said he may have been shot. The victim told police he was sleeping in his truck when a man opened the driver’s side door and demanded the victim’s wallet. Smith told the man he didn’t have one. The man asked Smith for his wallet two more times, and Smith gave the same reply. The man then shot Smith in the face, striking his left cheek. Smith said he deflected a second shot.

Reminder from OSHP

SOUTHINGTON — The Ohio State Highway Patrol is reminding motorists of their responsibility when approaching an intersection with a traffic signal that is not functioning properly or clearly assigning the right of way.

State law requires the driver of a vehicle, streetcar or trackless trolley to stop before entering an intersection with a malfunctioning traffic signal, and then yield the right of way to all vehicles, streetcars or trackless trolleys in the intersection or approaching the intersection if they would constitute a hazard if the driver entered the intersection.

Earlier last week, the Ohio Department of Transportation announced it will no longer erect stop signs at dark signals in order to comply with Federal Highway Administration policy and the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
