Jordan Ricks’ goal for Canfield was the only score of the game against Lakeview.

STRUTHERS — Cardinal Mooney High second-year boys soccer coach Larry Lencyk let a smile creep on his face late in Thursday’s 3-1 win over Massillon Jackson.

Mooney’s defense was the reason for Lencyk’s elation and also the cause of the win over Jackson, last season’s state Division I runner-up.

“The defense covered for each other,” Lencyk said. “They communicated; they played very organized.”

Mooney (2-0) started defenders Eric Renberg, Nicola Frangopoulos, Sean Sinkich and Rob Fox in a flat back four formation with Jon Critell in goal.

“We contained a very potent offense which didn’t lose anybody from last year’s state runner-up squad,” said Lencyk.

Mooney took a 1-0 halftime lead on Matt McWilson’s goal off a Thomas Beck assist.

McWilson and Beck scored on the second half with James Simon and Leo Hicks recording the assists.

“They were the runner-up in Div. I last year; it was a high intensity game,” said Hicks, a senior center midfielder.

The Polar Bears (0-1) scored on a 30-yard free kick by Derek Zuniga with under three minutes to play.

“We want to shut teams out,” Lencyk said. “Our goal is to not leave other teams score.”
