Niles residents complain about noise

SPECIAL TO THE VINDICATOR

NILES — Things are getting a bit too noisy in certain areas of Niles, at least as far as some residents are concerned.

At its Wednesday night meeting, city council heard complaints about the volume of noise at Niles Expanded Metals Plastics on Pleasant Avenue and McMenamy’s Restaurant on Youngstown-Warren Road.

Nick Picciano of North Pleasant Avenue said the noise at night has gotten worse since the industrial plant added a new press.

“I spoke with the plant manager, but he said that nothing could be done,” Picciano said. “It’s hard to sleep at night.”

Safety Director Maurice Guarino said he would speak to the manager but questioned whether the city could help Picciano.

He also cautioned about unintended results of the complaint. “I don’t want to see people lose jobs because of something like this,” Guarino said.

As for McMenamy’s, Dave Anderson of Cardinal Lane, McKinley Heights, who lives near the restaurant, said the volume pumps up from the bar late at night.

“Forget about sleeping when that happens,” Anderson said. “We’ve been fighting this for four years.

Several council members indicated they would look into the noise ordinance, and Guarino said he planned to speak with the restaurant operators.
