Beck’s three goals pace Mooney’s 5-0 win over Fitch


Ursuline also won a shutout, while Canfield ‘s girls defeated Warren JFK, 9-1.

AUSTINTOWN — Junior Thomas Beck scored three goals and made one assist Wednesday to lead the Mooney High boys soccer team to a 5-0 victory over Fitch.

Matt McWilson and Joe Merlo scored the other goals, all of which were netted in the first half.

James Simon had two assists and Chris Felker had one for the Cardinals (1-0). Goalkeeper Jon Critell made two saves and shared time in goal with Brendon Fotiuk.

Fitch (0-1) goalkeeper Bobby Douglas made 12 saves.

JVs: Mooney 2-0.

Ursuline 3, Canton Central Catholic 0

YOUNGSTOWN — Mike Vanes scored two goals and John Buckley added one for the Irish (2-0). Manuel Esparra had two assists and Kevin Patrick one. Andrew Rich had three saves. Andrew Streb had two saves for the Crusaders (0-1). Ursuline had six shots on goal and Canton CC three.

JVs: Ursuline 4-2.

Poland 11, Hubbard 1

HUBBARD — Ryan Storkel scored three goals, while Dan Hunt and Matt Mrozek added two apiece and Spencer Booth, Ryan Rovnak, Taylor Malaniak and Leo D’Angelo one each for the Bulldogs (1-0).

Rovnak had two assists, while Storkel, Jonathan Elias, Charles Lamping and Scott Riddle had one apiece.

The Bulldogs had 18 shots on goal and Hubbard three.

Crestview 3, Lordstown 1

NEW WATERFORD — The Rebels’ Nate Norris celebrated his 18th birthday by scoring two goals, while Seth DeMoulin scored one. Greg Bing had an assist.

Mike Vigairito scored the goal for the Red Devils.

Heartland Christian 8, East Liverpool 5

EAST LIVERPOOL — Kyle Knepper scored four goals, Treg Luger added three and Durand Foutz one for the Lions (1-0) in the season opener for both schools. Zack Williams led the Potters with two goals.

Lions goalie Tyler Burgess had 13 saves, while East Liverpool’s Tyler Culp had 17. Nate Hall of Heartland Christian had 33 stops.

Girls

CANFIELD — Senior Molly Martin scored two goals, while Shea Price, Kelly Fening, Dayna Love, Rachel Morris, Anokha Padubidri, Katie Siskowic and Audrey Smith each scored one as Canfield posted a 9-1 victory over Warren JFK in girls soccer.

Jenne, Battaglia, Kendyl Carlisle, Michelle Getterny and Morris each had an assists for the Cardinals (2-0). Meghann Perisa scored the goal for the Eagles (0-1). Audrey Prokop had 10 saves.

Hubbard 3, Beaver Local 1

EAST LIVERPOOL — Kayla Kroesen had a goal and an assist while Anna Giancola and Krista Julian each added a goal to lead Hubbard (2-0) in the opener for Beaver Local.

Ellen Bejeot and Alexis Black added assists for the Eagles while goalie Mariah Gordon contributed seven saves.

Brittany Dowd scored Beaver Local’s lone goal while Leah Wilson had 10 saves.
