Ruth roundup: One win, one loss

The Youngstown Babe Ruth 14-year-old baseball team remained unbeaten in World Series play, while the 13-year-old squad suffered its first loss of the tournament in action Monday.

In Quincy, Mass., Youngstown’s Andre Jones pitched and hit his team to a 4-1 win over Skagit Valley, Wash.

Jones pitched six innings, allowing one run on three hits, and he went 3-for-3 at the plate, driving in three runs.

“Andre is a gutty kid,” said Youngstown manager Terry Landis. “He threw a lot of strikes.”

With the victory, Youngstown (3-0) is assured a spot in the bracket portion of the tournament, which begins Thursday.

Skagit Valley (0-2) scored its only run on the game on a run-scoring single by Sean Fitzgerald in the top of the seventh inning, which drove in Marchael Acode, who doubled.

Youngstown is off today and will play Nederland, Texas, Wednesday at 2:30 p.m.

Landis said the team plans to have batting practice this morning then will head to Fenway Park for a tour.

In Jamestown, N.Y., the Youngstown 13-year-olds lost to Thurston County (Wash.), 9-6, for its first loss in three games.

Washington scored three runs in the top of the first inning and never trailed in the contest, though Youngstown scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh and had the tying run at the plate to make things interesting.

Ryan Brumbaugh had three hits for Youngstown, including a pair of doubles, and an RBI.

Chris Maze and Jacob Froats both added a pair of singles for Youngstown.

Jake Biscay pitched five innings to pick up the win for Washington, and he also hit an RBI triple.

Youngstown also has today off and will play Bryant (Ark.), Wednesday at 2:30 p.m.

The local team is still in good shape for advancing to the bracket portion of the tournament. Youngstown is 2-1 and has already defeated the other two teams with one loss.

Bryant (Ark.) was 2-0 in pool play.
