Penn St. coach to speak to alums
The Lawrence County Penn State Alumni Association is rolling out the red carpet for its banquet on May 15 at the New England Banquet Center on state Route 18 in New Castle.
This year, they have an outstanding after-dinner speaker in Tom Bradley, defensive coordinator with the Penn State football program.
Bradley could possibly be the one in line to step into Joe Paterno’s shoes should JoePa decide to step down. Paterno is 81 and in the final year of his contract. He has not released his notions as to how long he will coach, saying, “I don’t need a contract to stay on the sideline.”
Bradley, in recent years, was a featured speaker at the Mercer County Hall of Fame. He was highly received.
PSU is in agreement with Paterno’s wishes saying he can coach as long as he wishes and he doesn’t need a contract any more.
Paterno, with 372 wins trails Florida State’s Bobby Bowden by one for most career victories among major college coaches. Paterno said, if and when he does retire, he would consider picking someone from his staff as a replacement.
This year’s banquet at the New Englander will honor all Lawrence County Football Alumni. All Lawrence County residents who played football for the Nittany Lions will be honored. A large crowd is expected. The event begins at 6 p.m., with what officials are calling a Pre-Game Tailgate, followed by a 7 p.m. “Kickoff.”
Tickets, priced at $40 each (cash bar) are available at the following places: Augustine’s Pizza, 833 E. Luttton St., New Castle; Bucky’s Barbershop, Westgate Plaza, West State State, New Castle; The Crane Room, 3009 Wilmington Road, New Castle; Hudson Lunch, 102 E. Washington St., New Castle; and The Apple Castle, 277 Rt. 18, New Wilmington. For more information contact Anthony “Bucky” Richards. It was announced that all attending should wear their favorite PSU attire.
A program booklet is being prepared. Deadline for submitting ads, with payment and artwork, is Monday. Make checks payable to Lawrence County Penn State Alumni Association. For more information contact J. Bruce Bauman, 2615 Graceland Road, New Castle, Pa.
All proceeds from the dinner will help fund the Lawrence County Penn State Alumni Association’s Scholarsip Fund.
