Most-hugs record try

WARREN — Canfield resident and cancer survivor Jeff Ondash will try to break the Guinness World Record for most hugs in an hour Saturday and at the same time raise money for the American Cancer Society.

Ondash, a graduate of Chaney High School and Youngstown State University, will attempt to set the record beginning at 11 a.m. at Warren G. Harding High School’s Mollenkopf Stadium, 860 Elm Road. Registration for the event is 10 a.m. Participants are asked to make a $5 donation. The dollars will be distributed to Relay for Life events in Niles, Warren, Liberty, Cortland and Lordstown/Newton Falls.

Event organizers said if 1,500 people come to the hug-in, and Ondash hugs them all, he will set the record.

Dairy Queen vandalism

YOUNGSTOWN — A Dairy Queen customer, irate because the sundae prepared was not to her liking, pushed a “Server dip” machine to the floor, spilling syrup and toppings, and her companion joined in to push a rack of cards and other items to the floor, police said.

The drama took place around 9:45 p.m. Monday at the Belmont Avenue store.

A clerk told police that the first woman did not like the sundae and refused to pay for it, asking that she be given a different item. The clerk told the woman that she had to pay for the sundae and was not going to be served anything else.

The two young women ran from the store when told police were on their way.

Armed robber sought

LIBERTY — Township police are looking for the man responsible for an armed robbery and carjacking late Monday.

Police said the manager of the Midas auto repair center on Belmont Avenue was leaving the building just after 11 p.m. Monday after locking up for the day when a man wearing a sweat shirt with the hood pulled over his head appeared near his car and pointed a gun. The man ordered the manager to his knees.

The manager handed over bank deposits from the business, his wallet and his car keys. The hooded man then sprayed the manager with pepper spray and drove off in the manager’s car.

Benefit for teen in coma

SALEM — Quaker City Raceway is having a craft show and racing benefit to help raise money for the family of 13-year-old Caleb Cope.

Cope has been in a coma since last July, after a golf cart he was driving flipped over, and though he was able to return home from the hospital in January, he requires special care.

The benefit will be from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 4 at the raceway to help the Cope family afford home renovations and medical equipment. General admission is $2, and a test and tune-up for cars and bicycles is $15. All admission proceeds, as well as proceeds from a Chinese auction and 50/50 drawing, will be given to the family.
