YOUNGSTOWN — The Boardman man charged with raping a young boy three times between June 2002 and June 2004 and filing false tax returns has pleaded guilty to three misdemeanor offenses in the rape case.
Darryl L. Adams, 44, of Glenwood Avenue, pleaded guilty to unlawful sexual conduct with a minor, and two counts of assault Monday in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court. His victim was 14 when the offenses began.
Prosecutors are recommending 18 months in prison when Judge James C. Evans sentences Adams at 10:30 a.m. June 5.
Adams originally was charged with first-degree felonies that could have landed him in prison for up to 30 years.
Dawn Krueger, an assistant county prosecutor, said Adams used his status as a youth pastor in the boy’s church to take advantage of the teenager.
Adams and prosecutors agreed last May to allow Adams to take a lie-detector test that would have allowed all charges to be dropped if he passed it.
Adams went to the testing site but did not take the test, his attorney, Dennis DiMartino, said.
Adams was indicted by a federal grand jury in February on charges that he filed false tax returns for clients that inflated tax refunds between 2002 and 2004 for at least 29 clients. That case is pending.
