Bill Clinton in Hermitage

HERMITAGE, Pa. — Former President Clinton returns to the Shenango Valley today with a stop in Hermitage.

Clinton will speak at 3:30 p.m. at Hickory High School, 640 N. Hermitage Road on behalf of his wife, U.S. Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y., who is seeking her party’s presidential nomination.

The former president spoke Wednesday to a crowd of more than 1,000 at New Castle Junior/Senior High School.

The crucial Pennsylvania Democratic primary is Tuesday.

Polls show Clinton with a lead among Pennsylvania Democrats over U.S. Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., who is also seeking his party’s presidential nomination. Obama leads in delegates nationally.

Boil order in Canfield

CANFIELD — The city has issued a precautionary boil order for residents of Neff Drive until 11 a.m. today. The city experienced a waterline break about 10 a.m. Friday on Neff.

Pressure reduced for about an hour. As a precautionary measure, water for drinking, cooking and oral hygiene should be boiled for at least one minute before use. The city has no evidence that the water system was contaminated.

Crash on Route 170

NEW MIDDLETOWN — A tractor-trailer and car crashed around 4:30 p.m. Friday at state Route 170 and East Calla Road, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol Canfield post. At least one person was injured and taken to a hospital, the patrol said. No further details were immediately available at press time.

Veterans group to meet

YOUNGSTOWN — The Calvary Cemetery grave decoration committee of the Mahoning County United Veterans Council is scheduled to meet at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Mahoning County Veterans Service Commission Office, 2801 Market St. The meeting is for organizations decorating at Calvary Cemetery. Applications for Memorial Day expenses will be available.

Streets to be swept

LOWELLVILLE — The city will sweep streets Monday through Friday, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Residents are asked to sweep gravel from sidewalks onto the street before their areas are cleaned, and to remove vehicles from the roadway during sweeping hours. The schedule is: Monday and Tuesday, east of McGill Street and the south side of town; Wednesday and Thursday, and Friday, if necessary, west of McGill.

Leadership training

NEW MIDDLETOWN — The village police department recently completed an officer leadership training program in Cleveland.

Sergeants Kenneth Goist and Vincent D’Egidio were the last ranking officers to complete 120 hours of training. The Police Executive Administrative Leadership School classes focus on police department management, from human relations, case law and ethics to leadership and planning principles.

The department’s patrol officers also have completed state-required continued professional education.

OCCHA health fair set

YOUNGSTOWN — Organizacion Civica y Cultural Hispana Americana’s free health fair will be 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday at the social service agency’s hall, 3660 Shirley Road.

Information/free screenings will be available for diabetes, cholesterol, high blood pressure, vision, ears, osteoporosis, Alzheimer’s disease, cancer prevention, lupus, prostate, HIV/AIDS, tobacco, and lead poisoning.

There also will be body-fat testing, prescription drug assistance, and information on domestic violence, mental health, and pregnancy and child development. There will be door prizes, and a healthful lunch served from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. For more information call OCCHA at (330) 781-1808.

Bleachers to be built

NEW CASTLE, Pa. — The city school board has decided to build a second set of bleachers at Taggart Stadium. At a recent meeting the board agreed to pay Dave York Sports of Louisville, Ky., close to $208,000 to build the 700-seat grandstand, which is to serve as the student seating section of the stadium. The work is to be completed by the start of the 2008 football season, school officials said.
