Halloween Spooktacular

YOUNGSTOWN — The Children’s Museum of the Valley, 139 E. Boardman St. downtown, seeks participation from area nonprofit groups for its second annual Halloween Spooktacular, noon to 5 p.m. Oct. 13.

Nonprofits that serve children and/or families are invited to raise awareness of their organizations by passing out fliers to parents and candy to area youth who are between the ages of 2 and 12. There is no charge to participate. The museum also invites organizations to set up a display about their institutions. Contact the museum no later than Oct. 8; space is limited. Work on Route 625

BOARDMAN — Beginning Thursday, state Route 625 just north of U.S. Route 224 will have various lane restrictions for a $125,000 culvert replacement through mid-October by Ohio Department of Transportation workers.

Pumpkin weigh-off

GREEN — The 13th annual Ohio Valley Giant Pumpkin Growers weigh-off will be Oct. 6 at the Parks Garden Center, 9010 Youngstown-Salem Road.

Organizers hope to squash state and national records. The heaviest pumpkin will be awarded $2,500. Prizes will also be awarded for heaviest watermelon, tomato, muskmelon and field pumpkin, and the longest gourd.

Entries must be received by 9 a.m. The weigh-off will begin at 10 a.m. Exhibits will be displayed until 4 p.m. Admission is free.

The following day, entrants will race pumpkin boats in the “Pumpkin Regatta” at the Parks Garden Center lake from noon to 2:30 p.m.

Volunteers for festival

YOUNGSTOWN — Volunteer Services Agency, Inc., a United Way Agency, needs volunteers for the Park Vista Apple Butter Festival, Oct. 6. Volunteers are needed to stir apple butter while it cooks. This is a fun activity for families with middle school children and older. Shifts are one hour, and three to four people are needed per shift to rotate during the hour. Coats sought for kids

The Mahoning/Trumbull AFL-CIO Union Counselors are collecting new and gently used coats to be distributed to children in our community to help keep them warm this winter. Trumbull County: United Way, 3601 Youngstown Road, Warren.

Mahoning County: Building Trades, 493 Bev Road, Building 3, Boardman; AFSCME Ohio Council 8, 150 S. Four Mile Run Road, Austintown; and all Youngstown post offices.

MetroParks meeting

CHAMPION — The Trumbull County MetroParks Board will have a public meeting to receive input and recruit volunteers. The meeting will be 7 p.m. Oct. 4 in Room 117 T of the Technology Building at Kent State University Trumbull Campus. The meeting will educate the public on the current park lands, seek participation in surveys, educate about the comprehensive planning process and encourage volunteering on committees. The meeting will last about 90 minutes. Current MetroParks include Canoe City in Leavittsburg, Clarence Darrow Park in Champion, Foster Park in Newton Township and the Western Reserve Greenway Bike Trail in Bloomfield, Bristol and Champion. River Watchers meeting

HERMITAGE, Pa. — The Shenango River Watchers will have a meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Hermitage Volunteer Fire Department, station three on Maple Drive. The public is invited to attend.
