“Dexter” (9 p.m., Showtime): Diving into a second season of “Dexter” caused Michael C. Hall, the actor in the title role, to be a bit perplexed. “There was a concern on the part of the audience and, even internally, that last season so much was involved,” Hall says. “... We wondered where we could go.” Most of the acclaimed first season involved the title character’s search for the Ice Truck Killer, a shadowy serial slayer stalking Miami, who turned out to be Dexter’s brother. “The writers have really stepped up and embraced (the idea that) there is a whole, wide-open landscape for them this season,” says Hall, who garnered a 2007 Emmy nomination for playing Dexter Morgan, a forensic expert by day and a vigilante/serial killer by night. That’s not to say loose ends from last season don’t come into play. After all, Dexter did frame his girlfriend’s ex-husband for drug possession, and that landed the abusive ex-con back in prison. In Sunday’s opener, the ex convinces at least one person close to Dexter that Dexter has a dangerous and manipulative dark side. On another front, the police uncover the underwater graveyard where Dexter has been stashing his victims. Soon, the FBI launches an investigation as to what kind of monster would kill so many people and then hide the bodies. “The (moral) code that Dexter had is not so hard and fast anymore. Dexter is really on shaky ground,” Hall says. “Of course mistakes go through the roof once this FBI investigation (of the murders) begins.”

“Desperate Housewives” (9 p.m., ABC): As this divine comedy-drama starts a fourth season, folks still like the show, though it’s fallen out of grace with critics. (P.S., folks know better than critics sometimes.)

“Brothers & Sisters” (10 p.m., ABC): “Brothers & Sisters,” one of the pleasant surprises of last season, returns with an episode that finds birthday-girl Kitty struggling to deal with the enormous challenges that come with being engaged to a U.S. senator. Also, the Walkers get some stunning news from Iraq.
