Memorial service Sunday for Rev. Rex Humbard in Akron

AKRON, Ohio (AP) — Services remembering the life of the preacher whose televangelism ministry once reached more parts of the Earth than any other religious program will be held this weekend.

The Rev. Rex Humbard died Sept. 21 of natural causes in a hospital near his Florida home.

The 88-year-old Humbard evolved his ministry from revivals across the country to a permanent home in Akron, Ohio, and television.

Humbard will lie in state Saturday afternoon at evangelist Ernest Angley’s Grace Cathedral that Humbard opened in 1958 and was once known as Humbard’s Cathedral of Tomorrow.

A memorial is scheduled for Sunday afternoon under a large tent at the Stan Hywet (HYOO’-wet) Hall & Gardens in Akron.

He will be buried near his parents and sister in Akron.
