Top performances from Week 5

Thursday, September 27, 2007

Dan Banna, Canfield — It could be argued that the Cardinals used a team effort to beat Niles last Friday, but the junior running back’s performance was top-notch — 17 rushes, 142 yards and two touchdowns. He ranks fifth in the Metro Athletic Conference with 405 yards and has six TDs.

Jared Province, JFK — Clairton High came into Friday’s game against the Eagles with a 3-0 record and averaging 45 points per game. Province led a JFK onslaught with 283 yards rushing — averaging better than 12 yards per carry — and three TDs in the Eagles’ 44-18 rout.

Brett Cubellis, Girard — The senior receiver had a night to remember — 8 catches for 139 yards and a touchdown — as the Indians defeated Liberty 31-30 at Arrowhead Stadium. His touchdown, with just over 5 1/2 minutes remaining, tied the score at 30, and Chris Weibel’s extra point provided the winning margin.

Trent Vallinger, Poland — The junior running back rushed for 120 yards and scored two touchdowns in the Bulldogs’ 56-7 victory over East Liverpool, and he did it with minimal effort — just seven carries. The performance boosted Vallinger’s season totals to 421 yards (third-best in the MAC).

Dan McCarthy, Mooney — The senior quarterback was tough to bring down against Mentor Lake Catholic. Keying a 40-14 win, McCarthy rushed 16 times for 205 yards and scored a pair of touchdowns as the top-ranked Cardinals remained unbeaten.
