Scholarship competition targets vocabularies

Saturday, September 22, 2007

YOUNGSTOWN — The National Vocabulary Championship (NVC) is a scholarship competition that offers high school students a fun way to expand their vocabularies and better prepare for their college entrance exams.

The NVC, created in 2006 by GSN and The Princeton Review, offers free educational resources that can be downloaded at www.winwithwords.com and awards more than $100,000 annually in money toward college and other prizes. Last year, more than 30,000 students participated in the competition.

The NVC will be hosting championships in eight regions around the country, including Northeast Ohio and Pittsburgh, between Oct. 15 and Nov. 2.

At each event, 100 students who attend schools in the area and who achieved top scores on the in-school qualifying exam will compete in a live, game-show style competition in which one student will be named Citywide Champion and will receive $5,000 toward college tuition.

In addition, the NVC will be offering the National Qualifying Competition for which an online national qualifying exam will be administered at winwithwords.com each day during the month of November.

Free Princeton Review study guides are available at the Web site to help students prepare for the SAT, ACT and the NVC.

Top scorers from the national qualifying exam will advance to a proctored regional exam Jan. 12, 2008, to determine the finalists.

Eight Citywide Champions and 42 top scorers from the National Qualifying Competition will receive a trip to Los Angeles to compete in the NVC Finals for $40,000 toward college tuition and the title of National Vocabulary Champion.

The competition is open only to high school students who are legal residents of the U.S., between the ages of 13 and 19.  For more information, visit www.winwithwords.com.
