Bar noise draws complaint from city resident

Tuesday, October 30, 2007

WARREN — A city resident has expressed his concern to the police chief about the operation of a local after-hours spot, claiming it is a public nuisance.

Daniel Mamula of Douglas Street asked Police Chief John Mandopoulos on Monday what can be done about the noise from Benji Brown’s bar on North Park Avenue he said comes “at all hours of the night.”

Mamula said it is impossible to sleep some nights because of the loud music coming out of the bar.

Mandopoulos said officers have to witness and hear the loud music before they can do anything.

“We will come every time we are called, but there is not a heck of a lot we can do,” he said.

Law Director Greg Hicks suggested Mamula call 911 when he has a complaint so it can be recorded. He said that after so many complaints about an establishment, a court order can be obtained.

He added that there is not a specific amount of calls to 911 that have to be made and, depending of the severity of the call, something can be done over a period of time.

Mamula said he felt better now that he knows something can be done.
