Patrol investigating
1-vehicle traffic death

CHAMPION — Ohio State Highway Patrol, Southington Post, continues its investigation of a one-vehicle crash at 3:07 a.m. Sunday on U.S. Route 422, west of Templeton Road, in which Andy Williams Jr. of South Euclid died.

An OSHP report said the 33-year-old man was eastbound on Route 422 when he lost control of his 1996 Volkswagen, crossed the median into the westbound lane and then overturned. The victim, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected from his vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

6 drivers arrested

The Mahoning County OVI Task Force arrested six impaired drivers when it stopped 536 vehicles during a sobriety checkpoint conducted from 10 p.m. to midnight Saturday at Mahoning Avenue and Millet Avenue on Youngstown’s West Side.

The task force, which stopped drivers to check for those who are operating a vehicle impaired, tested 12 people for impaired driving. There were four driving under suspension arrests and one arrest for lack of an operating license.

The Ohio Investigative Unit/Ohio Department of Public Safety also was out to follow up on complaints about illegal sales of alcohol. The Wedge in Austintown was cited for sales to minors. Two people were arrested — a bartender charged with underage sales and an individual charged with underage consumption.

Man held in assault

YOUNGSTOWN — Paul Lindsay, 38, of the 3000 block of Glen Oaks, was arrested about 1:56 a.m. Sunday after police said he assaulted a bartender at Big D’s, 3143 Mahoning Ave. The bar owner told police he asked Lindsay to leave because he was bothering another bar patron, an ex-girlfriend. The bar owner said Lindsay became upset and punched a bartender who had accompanied the owner. Police said Lindsay punched the bartender multiple times in the head, and Lindsay was escorted out of the bar, where a large crowd was found in the parking lot. He was charged with assault and misuse of 911 after he called the emergency number from the back of a cruiser because he wanted to know why police had put him there. He was taken to the Mahoning County Jail. The victim was seeking medical treatment.

Extra Halloween patrols

YOUNGSTOWN — Roughly a dozen police officers will be out patrolling on Halloween, from 3 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, concentrating on traffic safety. The focus will be on speed, impaired driving and seat belt usage. The department received a $30,737 grant from the Ohio Department of Public Safety to join in a statewide effort to reduce fatal crashes.

Seniors safety seminar

BOARDMAN — The township police and fire departments will host a safety seminar for senior citizens from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Nov. 5. The event will be at the township government center, Market Street. Light refreshments will be served.
