Want to get away for a weekend and witness something totally unique?
How about Cabela’s which is situated on Route 78, a little north-east of Harrisburg.
It’s one of the finest sports-oriented stores to be found anywhere. It has everything your heart would desire and then some. It’s just a sportsmen’s dream and that’s why the store carries the name of National Outfitters..
In addition to its tremendous clothing line, there are hunting and fishing areas that bring the outdoor world to life.
There are huge glass tanks in the fishing areas which house live fish in their natural habitats. They are specimens of fish adapted to Pennsylvania waters such as muskie, bass, trout, pike, salmon, catfish, perch and you name it.

There were big fish, little fish, all kinds of fish. A stream, adorned with bridges, actually flowed throughout the huge facility with fish swimming in the crystal clear waters.
There were other such areas as you proceeded on your way. One area was devoted to the wilds of Africa with elephants, water buffalo, lions, tigers and other exotic animals abounding. The taxidermists left little to be desired and the animals appeared ever so life-like.
Also on the first floor was a huge deer room which featured trophy bucks taken from most parts of the United States. These truly were trophy bucks and their antlers showed why. In the same room were more deer shown in their natural environment of rocks, moss and trees.
The stone pillars which dotted the entire store were just beautiful and added immensely to the sportsmen’s theme of the store with one display reaching high into the second floor. It was a mountain of animals, again in their natural habitat which featured bears, mountain lions, leopards and smaller animals. The display once again was awesome .
On the second floor, along with a number of other sales departments, was a restaurant and a shooting gallery where shoppers could try their luck shooting at a number of different targets.
Also on the second floor, one could look down upon the huge mountain of animals, getting a top-side view of the entire scenic area.
Store built on big hill
The store itself was built on a big hill, A huge parking lot could certainly handle whatever the size of the attendance. Approaching the entrance, on the outside of the building, were two men in a canoe (possibly represented Lewis and Clark) battling turbulent waters. The display set the theme for a most tasteful visit inside.
We know of one other Cabela’s (National Outfitters) and that one is located in Wheeling, W. Va. And from what we’ve heard it’s just as beautiful as the one near Harrisburg.
There are also a number of other attractions in the area, including Amish and Mennonite flea markets which are held each Wednesday in Bellville. The scenic views are breathtaking.
