Woman faces 8 animal cruelty charges

Wednesday, October 24, 2007

WARREN – A 46-year-old Warren woman pleaded innocent to eight counts of animal cruelty. Melanie Tanner appeared Wednesday before municipal Judge Thomas Gysegem. She was released on a $1,500 personal bond and will return Dec. 6 for a hearing.

According to the police report, authorities went to 1543 Woodbine Ave., a house that she and her husband said they rented. There was the smell of urine and fecal matter coming from the house. The city building official condemned the house and the couple was ordered to vacate it.

β€œIt was a pretty ugly situation inside that house,” Ron Simone, Trumbull County deputy dog warden, recalled Wednesday.

Police returned the next day. The couple had left the house, but left 13 dogs, two cats and two rabbits behind. The report said several of the dogs were in poor health, diseased, emaciated and covered with fleas. Simone said he had to euthanize the sick dogs he removed from the house.
