Teacher of the month

CAMPBELL — Campbell Elementary second-grade teacher Nicholas Glatzer has been named the Ohio State Lottery’s October teacher of the month for the Youngstown area.

Glatzer was nominated by Principal Robert Walls for his ability to communicate with and motivate students.

“Mr. Glatzer is a professional staff member with compassion, enthusiasm, intellectual intensity and positive character,” said Walls. Glatzer “is a constructive beacon of hope and inspiration for those who come in contact with him.”

Glatzer received four free tickets to the Lake Erie Monsters American Hockey League game against Toronto on Nov. 17. He will be honored publicly at the game.

Defibrillator training

STRUTHERS — City police will begin training sessions on the use of Automatic External Defibrillators today after a two year effort to secure the life-saving devices by the local Rotary Club.

When training is complete, the devices will be placed in each of the department’s five cruisers and mounted on the wall inside the city jail. Officers will also be trained in first aid and CPR.

Two of the six AEDs were bought by the city, and the other four were bought by the Rotary Club. Each device was about $2,000, according to Chief Robert M. Norris.

Treez Please celebration

YOUNGSTOWN — Treez Please, a new organization dedicated to planting trees in the city, will host a celebration from 1 to 4 p.m. Oct. 27 to mark the dedication of its first project.

Those who participated in the “Common Ground” project planted six varieties of trees in two adjacent lots at the corner of Broadway and Kensington avenues on the city’s North Side. The public is invited to view the project as well as enjoy refreshments and take part in activities and entertainment for individuals of all ages. Some light landscaping work will also take place. The group plans to install a central meadow to demonstrate the value of flowers and grasses for birds and pollination, said Debra Weaver, president of the organization.

Wal-Mart evacuated

BOARDMAN — A Doral Drive discount store was evacuated Thursday afternoon because of a bomb threat, but nothing was found. The Wal-Mart reopened after a search by police discovered nothing suspicious. No charges have been filed.

Pop can collection

WARREN — An aluminum pop can collection to benefit Warren school pupils will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 27 at Grace United Methodist Church on Drexel Avenue Northwest, next to Emerson School. Money raised by the collection will be used to provide school supplies to kindergarten through eighth-grade pupils. The event is sponsored by the Northwest Neighborhood Association.
