Some of the better performances from last weekend you might have missed:
Dan McCarthy, Mooney — Everyone’s been talking about, but since the game was in Akron you might have missed it. McCarthy rallied the Cardinals from a 17-0 halftime deficit by rushing for one score and passing for two more. He accouned for 240 yards in Mooney’s 21-17 victory over Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary and was named national player of the week by USA Today.
Nate Schuler, Springfield — The Tiger senior seems to be a weekly member of this honor roll despite his team’s struggles in the won-loss column. Last weekend, in a 28-14 loss to Crestview, Schuler completed 21 of 39 passes for 344 yards and a touchdown, and he ran for a score.
Jarrod Lewis, Springfield — We shouldn’t mention one without his passing mate. Lewis caught 10 of Schuler’s completions, for 166 yards.
Kyle Stadelmyer, Girard — Another oft-mentioned standout, the Indians junior ran for 218 yards and five touchdowns in Girard’s 42-26 shootout against LaBrae. The performance lifted Stadelmyer over 1,000 yards rushing for the season and gave him 19 TDs.
Jared Province, Warren JFK — The Eagles made the long (looonnnggg) trek to Tuscarawas County and took care of previously once-beaten Tusky Valley 49-21. All Province did was rush for 149 yards on 22 carries and score five touchdowns. And for good measure, he ran a punt back for a sixth score.
Wellsville defense — The Tigers picked up their third win of the season — and second in the Inter Tri-County League Tier Two — with a dominating performance against Sebring. In a 36-6 victory, Wellsville permitted the Trojans just 25 plays from scrimmage and 36 total yards. The Tigers also recovered two fumbles.
