Canfield eyes costs of speed bumps

CANFIELD — The city has determined it would cost $15,000 to put two speed bumps on South Briarcliff Drive to slow down any speeders there, city manager Charles Tieche told council Wednesday.

Neighbors there have complained about speeders to the city lawmakers, saying they are afraid their children are in danger. The speed limit on the street is 25 mph.

Tieche said he went to the street with a radar gun on four different days at four different times and clocked 50 cars each time. He said that on the first day, 11 cars exceeded 35 mph.

The second day, seven exceeded 35 mph, he said. On the third day, three did, and on the fourth, again, three did, he said.

Tieche said that none of the cars exceeded 40 mph, and that it’s likely those drivers wouldn’t have gotten speeding tickets.

“We need to do more evaluation,” he said, to determine if there is a speeding problem there that warrants the speed bumps.

“If we do that on any given street, we’ll get other requests,” he said.

He said that putting speed bumps throughout town would cost $300,000.
