Youngstown sets tree-lighting for this weekend

Tuesday, November 27, 2007

YOUNGSTOWN — The city will ring in the holiday season Saturday with its annual tree-lighting ceremony.

City officials are expecting more than 100 residents to attend the celebration, featuring musical performances, holiday treats and a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus.

The program will begin at 3 p.m. on Central Plaza with a performance by the Plazateer Marching Band. The main event, at 4 p.m., will include speeches by Mayor Jay Williams and members of city council. Musical accompaniment will be provided by the Adventist Temple Emmanuel Seventh-day Adventist Church’s youth choir and mime group, “True Believers.”

After the ceremony, refreshments will be provided by Weaver Office Environments.

“It should be a full couple hours of fun,” said the city’s director of events, Claire Maluso.

Decorating this year’s 46-foot conifer with 1,500 lights and 250 bows will occupy an employee of the Park and Recreation department throughout this week. The tree was donated by Brunswick Road resident Jane Lopatta. It was delivered to Central Plaza last week courtesy of Diamond Steel.

Central Square will be closed to traffic during the free event.
