Kent St. falls to Buffalo in OT, 30-23

KENT — Buffalo’s Drew Willy led an 11-play, 73-yard fourth quarter scoring drive to tie Kent State, setting up Bran Thermilus’s 1-yard TD run in Saturday’s overtime that gave the Bulls a 30-23 win.

Willy was 34 of 44 for 334 yards and two touchdowns for Buffalo (5-7, 5-3 Mid-American East), including a four-yard score to Brett Hamlin that capped the long drive and made it 23-23 with just under five minutes to play.

Eugene Jarvis gained 196 yards on 34 carries for Kent State (3-9, 1-7) and also caught three passes for 68 yards, including a 24-yard TD reception in the first quarter.

Buffalo’s Ernest Jackson caught nine passes for 118 yards and a touchdown, while Naam Roosevelt caught eight passes for 90 yards and returned a first-half kickoff for 83 yards.

Ohio 38, Miami (Ohio) 29.

ATHENS — Kalvin McRae rushed for 112 yards and a touchdown to help Ohio rally.

After Taj Henley intercepted a pass by Miami quarterback Daniel Raudabaugh with 11:42 left in the third quarter, McRae scored on a 1-yard run to cap a five-play, 19-yard drive that gave the Bobcats (6-6, 4-4 Mid-American Conference) their first lead, 21-17.

Ohio’s Brad Bower completed 4 of 10 passes for 77 yards, including a 17-yard touchdown to Andrew Mooney, who also caught a 2-yard scoring pass from Theo Scott.

Cory Jones rushed for 103 yards on 25 carries for Miami (6-6, 5-2). Raudabaugh, who had a 3-yard touchdown pass to Chris Givens in the second quarter, completed 21 of 44 passes for 223 yards and two interceptions.

Nate Parseghian made five field goals for the RedHawks of 22, 19, 38, 41 and 20 yards.

QB Tim Hiller surpasses 3,000 yards, W. Mich. beats Temple, 16-3

KALAMAZOO, Mich. — Tim Hiller threw for 276 yards and one touchdown, becoming the first sophomore in Western Michigan history to surpass 3,000 passing yards in one season and leading the Broncos to a season-ending victory.

Hiller finished the season with 3,021 passing yards, No. 3 in school history behind Tim Lester, who had 3,639 yards in 1999 and 3,311 in ’98. Hiller completed 24-of-39 passes, including a 40-yard completion to Branden Ledbetter.

Mark Bonds ran for 105 yards and a touchdown, helping Western (5-7, 3-4 MAC) defeat Temple (4-8, 4-4) for the sixth consecutive time.

Jake Brownell kicked a 24-yard field goal for Temple, but that was the lone offensive highlight for the Owls. Quarterback Vaughn Charlton completed just 6-of-25 passes for 92 yards, and was sacked six times — not including two other sacks that were negated by penalties. He did have a career-long 25-yard run and a punt on third down that covered 58 yards.

WMU’s 438 yards of total offense tripled Temple’s 146. The Owls did not get a first down for the first 20 minutes of the game.

With a 5-yard touchdown pass from Hiller to give WMU a 7-3 lead in the second quarter, tight end Branden Ledbetter broke a school record for career scoring passes caught by a tight end (14). Jake Moreland and Tony Scheffler, who both played in the NFL, held the old record of 13.

WMU senior receiver Herb Martin caught a game-high seven passes for 100 yards in his last college game.
