The Devotees are releasing their debut album, “Cross Hung By Her Bed,” this weekend. A concept album, it is about two lovers who are separated when the Civil War breaks out. David Buker, chief songwriter for the Youngstown-based alt-rock band, said the story is timeless even though it takes place more than a century ago. Buker said he sees a lot of similar things happening today, caused by the U.S. involvement in Iraq.
The story isn’t the only timeless aspect of “Cross Hung By Her Bed”: the folky and intelligent music is at once old and new. The sonically lush album features male and female lead vocals, embellished with horns.
The Devotees will hold a CD release party Friday at Cedars Lounge, 23 N. Hazel St., downtown. Also on the bill are The Zou, Jacob Hope and the Free Agents and Britta Snowberger. Admission is $5 to the 18-and-over show. Tracks from “Cross Hung By Her Bed” can be found at myspace.com/thedevoteesband and at thedevoteesband.com.
