Accused of assault

YOUNGS-TOWN — A Youngstown school board member, who is also an employee of the city’s waste treatment plant, is charged with assault. Dominic G. Modarelli, 36, of DeCamp Road is accused of beating his 36-year-old girlfriend at their home Nov. 11. The woman said he started choking and punching her in the head and face. Modarelli is free on $2,500 bond and is scheduled for a pretrial hearing Jan. 7 in municipal court. If convicted, he faces up to six months in jail and $1,000 fine.

Finances investigated

YOUNGSTOWN — “Irregularities and discrepancies” were found in the financial records of the Youngstown District Council of the St. Vincent De Paul Society, and the person suspected of wrongdoing has been suspended while police investigate, according to the council. Fred Pisani, council president, said he wants to assure the community that pantry and dining hall services will not be interrupted during the investigation. Brian R. Corbin, executive director of Catholic Charities Services, is acting as executive director of the council to manage its daily operations. Corbin declined to name the person suspended or how much money is missing.

Thanksgiving meals

YOUNGSTOWN — The Mahoning County Sheriff’s Department Senior Services Unit, a collaboration of various agencies serving the elderly, will deliver Thanksgiving meals to 50 program participants throughout the county today. Anthem Blue Cross in Youngstown agreed to underwrite the program, said Kay Lavelle, program director. The meals will be prepared by AngeNetta’s in Canfield and distributed through Comfort Keepers on Mahoning Avenue.

Firefighters injured

WARREN — Four firefighters were slightly injured while battling a Tuesday night blaze at the home of Cleotis Cobb at 910 Martin Luther King Ave. S.W.

Those injured were Capt. Jeff Younkins, back; Lt. Bill Monran, elbow; Firefighter Dave Law, back; and Firefighter John McMillen, shoulder. None required hospital treatment.

Officials said the blaze broke out about 7:15 p.m. near the fuel oil furnace in the basement of the one-story frame structure. Cobb called the fire department when he was alerted to the fire. There was no estimate of damage.

Bridge formally opens

SHARON, Pa. — City and state officials formally opened the new State Street Bridge on Tuesday afternoon in downtown Sharon. Traffic started crossing the bridge last Friday. The previous 91-year-old bridge was closed in May and construction lasted through last week on the new one. The current bridge was built by Delta Construction of Hermitage at a cost of $3.9 million.

Police find marijuana
at scene of shootout

YOUNGSTOWN — Marijuana — nearly 10 pounds — was found inside 805 W. LaClede Ave. after a shoot-out between two men in the street and two men on the porch, police said. Flying bullets hit Saeed Garner, 22, of Lansdowne Boulevard in the arm Monday afternoon, pierced the front of 805 W. LaClede and made holes in two vehicles, reports show. Garner ran from the porch to his mother’s car in the street and she took him to St. Elizabeth Health Center, police said. Police searched the house and found three guns under the covers of a bed in a child’s room. Police also confiscated a five-pound brick of marijuana, four one-pound bags and three smaller bags of marijuana, reports show. No arrests were made. The investigation continues.
