MEN

No. 12 Michigan St. 86,
Chicago St. 53

EAST LANSING, Mich. — Raymar Morgan (Canton McKinley) had a career-high 25 points and 15 rebounds to help No. 12 Michigan State beat Chicago State in a first-round game of the CBE Classic. Morgan had 15 points and six rebounds in the first half to help the Spartans grab a 45-26 lead. All-American Drew Neitzel added 12 points for Michigan State. David Holston scored 18 points and had four 3-pointers for the Cougars, who led 18-17 before the Spartans took control with a 28-8 surge to finish the half. Freshmen Durrell Summers and Kalin Lucas provided first-half energy for Michigan State. Another newcomer, Chris Allen, had 13 points, while Summers added 12. John Cantrell and Chidozie Chukwumah each had 10 points for Chicago State.

Michigan State will face Louisiana-Monroe, a 60-53 winner over Northern Michigan, on Wednesday.

WOMEN

No. 3 Maryland 91, Delaware 43

COLLEGE PARK, Md. — Kristi Toliver had 19 points and 10 assists and Marissa Coleman had 16 points and five assists to help No. 3 Maryland win its third game in five days 9 in the quarterfinals of the Women’s National Invitation Tournament. Jade Perry had 11 points and 15 rebounds and Ashleigh Newman added 18 points and four rebounds for the Terrapins (3-0), who played for the second time without All-American forward Crystal Langhorne. The senior sat out with a sprained ankle. The Terrapins will host No.23 Notre Dame in a semifinal on Thursday. Maryland broke the game open with a 38-13 run over the final 14:24 of the first half after Delaware’s Courtney Irving tied the game at 8 with a pair of free throws.

No. 7 North Carolina 98, Elon 53

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Rashanda McCants scored 16 points to lead North Carolina to a rout of Elon. LaToya Pringle added 13 points on 6-of-7 shooting, Jessica Breland had 12 points and 11 rebounds and freshman Italee Lucas scored 12 points for the Tar Heels (3-0), who shot 48 percent, had 53 rebounds to Elon’s 33 and forced the Phoenix into 32 turnovers. Tierra Bumbrey had 15 points for Elon (1-3), which was held to 33.9 percent shooting and fell to 1-7 in the series. The Phoenix haven’t beaten North Carolina since 1975 — the Tar Heels’ first season of women’s basketball.

No. 8 Georgia 105, Georgia Southern 66

ATHENS, Ga. — Tasha Humphrey scored 18 points to help Georgia rout Georgia Southern. Humphrey moved into eighth place on Georgia’s career scoring list, passing Tracy Henderson. Humphrey now has 1,772 points. Five more Lady Bulldogs (3-0) scored in double figures, including Christy Marshall, who came off the bench to score a career-high 17 points, hitting eight of nine shots. Ashley Houts scored 16, Lindsey Moss 15, Angel Robinson 12 and Megan Darrah 11. Shawnda Atwood led Georgia Southern (1-2) with 16 points.

No. 23 Notre Dame 78,
Western Kentucky 59

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Ashley Barlow scored 18 points, Charel Allen added 16, No. 23 Notre Dame jumped to a 28-point lead in the first half and cruised in the second round of the WNIT. Notre Dame (2-0) dominated throughout, opening its big lead with Western Kentucky’s top two players, Crystal Kelly and Dominique Duck, sitting much of the half because of foul trouble. The Irish shot 51 percent in the first half while the Lady Toppers (1-1) shot 31 percent. The Irish, who had 98 points in their opening-game victory against Miami of Ohio, scored 50 in the first half but couldn’t keep up the pace in the second half.
