YOUNGSTOWN — Once released from the hospital, the man accused of driving 100 mph to elude police is expected to be arraigned in municipal court on a charge of failure to comply with a police order.

Roosevelt Cooper III, 30, of Gertrude Avenue was released from St. Elizabeth Health Center on Wednesday night. Police said Cooper sped off from the 300 block of West Marion Avenue around 2 p.m. Tuesday when officers approached to tell him to move his car, which was obstructing traffic. The car was parked near a known drug house, reports show. Cooper eventually crashed as he entered the U.S. Route 422 ramp at the Himrod Avenue expressway. The car struck a concrete median and flipped, landed on its roof and then burst into flames. Cooper crawled from the vehicle and was taken into custody.

Relay for Life event
planned in Austintown

AUSTINTOWN — An American Cancer Society Relay for Life event will be Saturday and Sunday at the Austintown Fitch High School Stadium. The relay begins at 9:30 a.m. Saturday and ends at 8 a.m. Sunday. There will be a community breakfast for the participants from 7:15-9:30 a.m. Saturday. A luminaria ceremony will take place from 9:30-10:30 p.m. Saturday.

Applications available for Italian scholarship

YOUNGSTOWN — The Youngstown Italian Heritage Foundation is accepting scholarship applications through July 3 from students who will be attending Youngstown State University this fall. Applicants must submit a biography describing their high school experience and an essay explaining why they should receive the scholarship along with their plans for the future. Four $1,000 scholarships will be awarded: Centofanti Scholarship, Tony Lariccia Family Scholarship, Fernando Riccione Scholarship and Don Pipino Scholarship. Mail applications to Flora Direnzo Schneider at 141 Homestead Drive, Columbiana, Ohio 44408. The awards will be presented at the Greater Youngstown Italian Fest on Aug. 4.

Academy Founder’s Day program set for tonight

YOUNGSTOWN — The Rev. Gary L. Frost of New York, former pastor of Rising Star Baptist Church, Youngstown, will be the keynote speaker at the Eagle Heights Academy Founder’s Day program at 7 tonight. The school is at 1833 Market St. The celebration will honor the 19 members of the academy’s first kindergarten class of 1998 who will enter high school this year. The school’s original board members will be recognized as will members of the community who played a key role in starting the academy.

Achievers Association Homecoming Festival

WARREN — The Trumbull County African-American Achievers Association Homecoming Festival begins Friday and runs through the weekend, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. each day. Proceeds from the 22nd annual celebration on Courthouse Square will benefit local charities and youth programs. It is held in memory of the late Van Williams, who founded the achievers association in 1985 and Achievers Hall of Fame and Festival in 1987.

The festival kickoff is a ribbon-cutting ceremony at noon Friday. There will be karaoke at 3 p.m. and Old School Band at 6 p.m.

On Saturday, a parade will begin at noon at the Second Baptist Church on Main Street and travel along Main to the square. There will be a talent show at 2 p.m., dance line at 4 p.m. and ballroom dancing at 5 p.m. Total Package Band will perform from 7-10 p.m. There will be gospel Sunday. The day will also include choirs, soloists, musicians, mimes, puppets, Messiah dancers and drama groups.
