Application deadline nears for county recorder position

YOUNGSTOWN — Those wanting to fill the vacant Mahoning County recorder’s position had better hurry. Deadline to apply for the job is Thursday.

The county Democratic Party’s precinct committee members will meet at 5:30 p.m. Monday to vote on who will fill Ronald Gerberry’s unexpired term that ends Dec. 31, 2008. The meeting will be held at the Byzantine Center at the Grove on Shady Run Road.

Each candidate will speak for about five minutes to the committee members before the vote, said county Democratic Chairwoman Lisa Antonini.

Gerberry of Austintown resigned April 30 as recorder, a position he held since January 2001, after being selected to fill the vacant 59th Ohio House District seat.

Those seeking the appointment should send a letter of interest by Thursday to Kenneth Carano, the party’s executive vice president, at his home: 1906 Countryside Drive, Austintown 44515.

The job pays $62,000 a year.

There are three announced candidates to date:

U Atty. Mark Belinky of Boardman, the county party’s secretary who ran for recorder in 2000.

U Noralynn Palermo of Youngstown, who’s worked in the recorder’s office for the past 32 years, about half of that time as the administrative assistant.

U Richard Slaina of Poland, a 23-year county engineer’s office employee.
