Quaker City Raceway plans Friday opening

SALEM — The Quaker City Raceway plans to open this Friday, according to former owner Daniel Swindell.

Mark and Tammy Mazzant of Ellwood City, Pa., have become the new owners of the facility just north of Salem.

Swindell said today that he would, “help out for at least the first year.”

Swindell attempted to sell the facility earlier this year but there were no buyers. No one wanted offer an opening bid of at least $1 million.

The purchase was approved Thursday. The price was not disclosed. Swindell said he could not release details at this time.

The new owners could not be reached.

Swindell said that they were trying to switch the insurance to allow racing this weekend. Without insurance, there can be no event, he said.

The Steel Valley Super Nationals had scheduled to run on June 22-24 despite the lack of a buyer. The event that brought in about 900 vehicles in 2006 and thousands of spectators is still on.

The track will celebrate its 50th anniversary this year. Swindell said no date has been set for the celebration.
